How to navigate dating apps safely without falling prey to scammers

The digital age has changed how we meet people, with dating apps and websites becoming the new go-to for romance. While they’ve opened doors to meaningful relationships, they’ve also become hunting grounds for scammers and fraudsters. From catfishing to financial scams, the risks are real.

But that doesn’t mean you should give up on online dating, it simply means you should date smart. Here are some tried-and-tested ways to protect yourself while keeping the fun alive.

Dating should feel safe, not suspicious:

When swiping on dating apps, keep an eye out for red flags that could signal a scam. Be cautious if someone seems “too perfect” and declares love or affection within just a few days, or if they constantly avoid video calls with excuses. Inconsistencies in their stories, such as changes in job details or location, are another warning sign.

Take your time:

A lack of genuine social media presence, very few photos, or a profile that looks newly created should also make you pause. Scammers often create fake accounts with stolen images. A quick reverse image search on profile photos can also reveal if the picture has been lifted from elsewhere.

Such people often try to move conversations off the dating app quickly, push for private meetings instead of public ones, and in many cases, and end up asking for money or favors.

Another giveaway is when they refuse to share even basic details about themselves while probing deeply into your personal life. Above all, if your gut tells you something feels off, trust it. Your instincts are one of your strongest safety tools.

Do your homework before you meet:

Before you commit to meeting in person, insist on a video call. This helps you confirm the person is who they claim to be and allows you to gauge their mannerisms and personality. Someone who avoids video chats, gives excuses, or insists on rushing to meet without proper conversation should raise red flags.

Meet in public spaces only:

When you do decide to meet, always choose a public place with lots of people, good lighting, and preferably CCTV cameras like crowded cafés, malls, or restaurants are ideal. Avoid secluded spots or inviting someone to your home on the first few dates. Public spaces not only keep you safer but also make it easier to leave if you feel uncomfortable.

Keep a friend in the loop:

Always inform a trusted friend or family member about your plans when you’re going, whom you’re meeting, and at what location. Share your live location if possible and let someone know when you’ve safely returned home. If something feels off, your safety net will already be aware and ready to help. Always keep emergency contacts and helpline numbers on speed dial.

Whether it’s the police, a friend, or a safety app, having quick access can make a crucial difference in alarming situations. Some dating apps also have built-in safety features like panic buttons — use them if necessary.
