Homes are no longer just spaces to live, they are havens for the mind and spirit. As city life accelerates and screens dominate the attention, people are craving calm. Enter the era of new neutrals; muted, thoughtful shades designed to soothe the senses and anchor our emotions in a hectic world.

Unlike traditional neutralsof beige, cream, and grey, new neutrals offer a layered, sensorial experience. Think sunbaked clay, soft river stones, dusky sand, and misty greens. “These colours speak to people on an emotional level,” Tusshar Joshi, principal designer and founder, Utkarsh Vastukaran, tells Moneycontrol. “They aren’t just about looking pretty, they’re about creating spaces that feel human, grounded, and restorative,” he adds.

The power of these shades lies in their ability to create visual stillness. Living rooms bathed in muted terracotta or mushroom taupe feel cocoon-like, while bedrooms painted in oat milk white or eucalyptus grey encourage sleep and decompression. “Even workspaces benefit; New neutrals help regulate focus without overwhelming the senses. It’s about reducing mental clutter through design,” Joshi explains, adding, “Colour can calm the mind, and when used thoughtfully, it’s transformative.”

Home decor tips: How to introduce new neutrals

Joshi shares tips on how to introduce new neutrals in your home:

Nature-inspired shades

Use colours that you see outside. For example, paint your living walls a soft mushroom toupe, add muted terracotta cushions, and a eucalyptus grey chair. All of these make your home feel calm and natural.

Mix with textures

Don’t just rely on colour alone. Mix the feel of things too. A soft linen bedspread, a rough jute rug, and a smooth stone lamp, can make the room feel interesting, cosy, and layered, without being cramped.

Play with light

Light changes a room’s, mood. Place a chair near a sunny window, so sunlight moves across the room during the day. Add a warm lamp for evening. This keeps the room, soft, and relaxing, no matter the time.

Multi-functional spaces

Make your room work for more than one thing. If your office doubles as a guest room, paint it warm putty, and use a neutral sofa bed. The colours keep it calm whether you’re working, relaxing, or hosting friends.

Personal touches

Add small things that tell your story, a handmade candle, a woven wall hanging, and some green plants make a neutral room feel lived-in, warm, and personal

New neutrals are a reminder that homes can be spaces of emotional restoration, where calm is intentional, and colour is a tool for wellbeing. “The most powerful spaces aren’t louder or brighter. They are quieter, softer, and designed with the human experience in mind. Choosing these shades is choosing a slower, gentler way of life,” Joshi says.
