Quirky décor trend: How playful statement pieces are transforming modern Indian homes

Quirky décor isn’t about being loud — it’s about being yourself. One well-chosen piece can shift the energy of an entire room, adding warmth, humour, and character. When done right, it turns a home into a place that feels truly personal, where every corner reflects a bit of you.

Quirky décor has become a favourite among design lovers, and it’s easy to see why. In a world where so many homes follow similar Pinterest-friendly themes, a playful object or unexpected accent can instantly change the mood of a room. It brings in individuality, warmth, and that spark of personality that makes a home feel lived in rather than styled for display. These touches don’t just fill a space as they tell stories, reflect memories, and often make people smile.

A bold vase, a sculptural lamp, a statement mirror, or an art piece with a sense of humour can quickly shift the energy of a room. When paired with classic furniture and a calm colour palette, these elements stand out beautifully without overwhelming the space. The magic lies in curating thoughtfully instead of crowding every corner. Sidhant Lamba, Founder of décor brand Strrot, says, “What makes this trend so relevant today is the emotion it brings. A cheeky sculpture, a chair with an unusual silhouette, or a lamp that instantly grabs attention — these aren’t just décor items; they make you smile and spark conversation. We believe that luxury isn’t only about perfection, it’s about self-expression. Quirky décor gives you permission to be creative, to mix things up, and to let your home tell your story in a unique way.”

Creating harmony, not chaos

The most common misunderstanding about quirky décor is that it has to be loud or chaotic. In reality, the best quirky interiors feel relaxed and intentional. They stand out because of the contrast they create and not because they compete for attention.

The key is choosing pieces that make a statement while still blending with the room’s personality. Lamba emphasizes the importance of moderation, “You don’t need too many for them to make an impact. Start small with a standout vase, a bold mirror, or a colourful chair, and let the rest of your space stay calm and neutral so the quirky elements can shine. Start by picking one focal piece and let it be the hero of the room. Keep the rest of the décor simple and neutral so that your bold piece has room to shine instead of competing for attention. Another great tip is to play with textures and tones instead of mixing too many bright colours or loud patterns.”

This approach works beautifully in modern Indian homes, where many people prefer clean-lined furniture in wood, muted tones, and natural textures. A single whimsical vase or a playful art print instantly adds life without disturbing the aesthetic. Soft, earthy colours in the background also make quirky pieces pop naturally.

Where to begin?

Start with accent furniture if you’re unsure where to experiment. A sculptural chair, an offbeat coffee table, or a console with interesting details can bring personality without overwhelming the room. Lighting is another effortless way to add charm. A playful lamp, an artistic floor light, or even a sculpted side table lamp can lift the entire mood of a corner. Smaller elements work just as well. A quirky candle stand, a pop of colour in wall art, an asymmetrical mirror, or a handmade ceramic piece can elevate a space while keeping things grounded.
