Holi brings a splash of colours and excitement to the otherwise humdrum life. The spirit of this colourful festival lies in its burst of colours and celebration. Amid all the excitement, it's important to keep your hair safe from harsh chemicals. A little care before, during, and after the fun can make a big difference.
Taking good care of your hair before, during, and after exposure to harmful colours is the secret to keeping it safe, healthy and strong, says Dr Rashmi Sharma, Senior Consultant in Dermatology at Fortis Memorial Research Institute in Gurugram. “Playing Holi festival with colours can be exciting, but it also comes with the risk of dry and dull hair. Also, coloured hair needs extra care to stay strong and shiny. However, simple protective steps can help prevent long-term damage,” she explains.

- Hue and cry: Before you play Holi, prep your hair to minimise damage. “Apply coconut, almond, or olive oil generously to create a protective barrier. This prevents colour from deeply disturbing the hair shaft and causing excessive dryness,” suggests Dr Sharma.
- Deep conditioning: A nourishing hair mask strengthens hair and ensures even absorption. “Use good hair masks available in the market or DIY one at home. You can use ingredients like curd, neem leaves, hibiscus flowers, fuller’s earth to name a few,” she says.
- Trim the trouble: Snipping off split ends prevents brittle strands from soaking up too much colour and looking frizzy. “Avoid heat styling before colour exposure, as weakened hair is more prone to damage. Also, use a leave-in serum or protective spray to protect hair from chemical damage,” she says.

- Go organic: Opt for ammonia-free or herbal hair colours like henna and indigo, which are gentler alternatives. Also, applying a light layer of conditioner can act as a protective shield against harsh pigments.
- Post Holi care: After colour exposure, gentle aftercare promises your hair stays soft and shiny. “Use a sulfate-free shampoo to cleanse without stripping natural moisture. DIY hair masks with aloe vera, yogurt, or honey can restore lost hydration and repair damage," Dr Sharma says.
- Cold water: A cold rinse seals the cuticle, locking in moisture and preventing excessive colour fading. “Regular coconut or argan oil massages restore shine and smoothness. Don’t forget to eat a protein-rich diet that keeps hair strong from the inside out,” she says.
