One of the most cherished festivals, Ganesh Chaturthi, is a celebration of devotion, merriment, and colourful decorations. As homes prepare to welcome Lord Ganesha, families are increasingly thinking about how to celebrate responsibly while still creating festive warmth. The move towards eco-friendly decor and storage reflects a cultural shift with traditional needs and mindful living.
The decor sets the tone for Ganesh Chaturthi, but festive beauty cannot come at the cost of the environment. “Simple swaps, such as replacing thermocol with sarees or dupattas, and decorating with banana leaves or cardboard cutouts, can create an equally striking and culturally rooted space,” says Vaishali Shah, Design Lead–Home Storage at Interio.

She suggests some creative and nature friendly tips to keep the Ganesh Chaturthi decor green:
Flower power
Flowers remain central to the festival. Marigolds, roses and even dried blooms lend a natural vibrance, while terracotta diyas, clay bells and brass urulis add an earthy grace. “Rangolis made from rice or turmeric bring biodegradable beauty to homes. Families are also turning to handmade décor, cutting newspapers into lotus motifs, folding origami elephants or stringing paper torans, making the celebration participative and child-friendly,” tells Shah.
Storage that balances functionality and festivity
In compact urban homes, storage often becomes a challenge during festivals. Wooden crates, stools and modular racks not only display idols beautifully but can also be reused afterwards. “Multi-purpose storage designed from bamboo, rattan or reclaimed wood helps homes stay organised while celebrating sustainably,” Shah points out. “Foldable units and movable shelves further ensure flexibility without adding clutter,”
Aesthetics with a green edge
The charm of eco-friendly décor lies in its ability to be both sustainable and visually striking. “Natural fabrics like cotton or jute, compostable serving plates and handmade clay diyas bring authenticity while reducing waste. Warm-toned fairy lights or oil lamps set a serene tone with lower energy use. Potted indoor plants add freshness to the mandap and stay on as lasting décor beyond the festival,” she says.
A greener festive culture
This shift towards mindful décor is more than a passing trend, it is a cultural transition. Shah shares, “Today’s consumers are looking for solutions that reflect sustainability without compromising beauty or convenience.” Choosing reusable décor and green storage ensures that devotion extends beyond homes, carrying joy to the environment we all share.
