It’s not just the festive season that lifts everyone’s spirits; it’s also a time when many couples tie the knot, adding to the cheer. But for brides and grooms-to-be, there are countless things to take care of, with the most important being looking your best on your special day.

Dr Gurveen Garekar, a popular dermatologist, told Moneycontrol some essential dos and don’ts for couples preparing for their big day. From staying hydrated for a natural glow to scheduling timely skin treatments to avoid last-minute mishaps, here are a few of her useful tips…

Lifestyle Changes: Dr Gurveen recommended staying hydrated and drinking a minimum of 3 litres of water per day. Besides keeping you healthy, it also gives your skin a natural glow. She stressed not only sleeping for the right number of hours but also establishing a fixed sleep cycle. She also advised taking supplements, including Omega-3 for hydration, magnesium for sleep, and glutathione and vitamin C for glow.

Diet Modification: A good diet is the secret to a fit body, a healthy mind, and glowing skin. She suggested eating sufficient protein and keeping your diet colourful — incorporating reds, yellows, and greens along with plenty of fruits and vegetables. Cutting down on sugar and alcohol was also high on her list.

Exercise Routine: She recommended exercising at least four times a week and avoiding drastic last-minute weight loss programs. For sustained results, it’s best to focus on the bigger picture: eat a balanced diet and adopt a healthy lifestyle rather than chasing short-term gains that can make you fall sick.

Skin and Hair Care: To avoid last-minute mishaps, Dr Garekar stressed finishing all makeup trials in advance and avoiding hair-smoothing treatments such as keratin, cysteine, smoothening, or botox when time is running short. She advised sticking to your regular skincare routine and avoiding new products. Applying sunscreen daily is non-negotiable, and she added, “Reapply when on a shopping spree, not just on your face but also your hands and feet.” This should be in addition to moisturising your entire body daily.

Pro tip: no new experiments, including mehendi testing, skin treatments, or trying face and back waxing, as these can cause reactions you don’t want anywhere near your D-day. She also suggested completing PRP, filler, and skin booster appointments at least four weeks before your first function.

She concluded by saying that staying happy and enjoying yourself is the real key, since the happiest bridal couples are also the prettiest bridal couples.
