There’s a charm to Indian festivities that’s hard to match — the heady mix of scents, colours, family chatter, and of course, homes decked in their seasonal best. But this year, it’s not about layering more and more.
According to architect and interior expert Anjaleka Kripalani, founder Angie Homes, Delhi, the focus is shifting toward fewer, bolder choices that create impact without overwhelming the space. "It’s about warmth, hospitality and a touch of quiet luxury," she says.
Lighting sets the tone
Lights have always been central to Indian celebrations, but in today’s décor vocabulary, they’ve taken on new form and flair. Think chandeliers with presence, clusters of pendant lights in the hallway, or tall lanterns that cast dramatic shadows in the corners of a living room.“Lighting sets the tone. A well-placed chandelier can do more for your space than a hundred string lights ever could,” shares Kripalani. She recommends metallic candle holders, shimmering diyas and layered lighting to enhance the festive glow — not just visually, but emotionally too.
Sculptures and florals
Gone are the days when brass idols sat unnoticed in a corner. Today, they’re the star. “Sculptural elements anchor a room — they speak of heritage, craftsmanship, and intent,” says Kripalani. Whether it’s an oversized ceramic vase brimming with marigolds, or a handcrafted brass figurine, these pieces become the quiet storytellers of your space. Even contemporary sculptures, when paired with traditional elements, add an edge that feels both festive and refined.
Textiles that transform
Few things transform a space faster than fabric. Rich throws, hand-embroidered cushions and bold area rugs in ruby, emerald or sapphire create an instant festive palette. Add silk or velvet drapes in metallic tones, and you’ve got a room that feels like it’s celebrating. “Textiles are tactile and visual. They make a home feel lived-in and loved, especially during festivals,” Kripalani notes.
Furniture for feels
Festive décor doesn’t stop at cushions and candles. Think carved consoles, inlaid coffee tables or brightly upholstered ottomans — all of which bring both function and charm. “Statement furniture pieces don’t just add luxury, they also create conversation.” These pieces serve as both stage and spotlight in your living room theatre.
Dining designs
The dining space is where stories are shared — and food, of course. A festive table doesn’t need to be fussy. Gold bowls, crystal candlesticks and elegant trays can elevate a meal to a moment. Kripalani suggests centrepieces with candles, flowers, and just a hint of shimmer. “It’s about curated sparkle — not chaos.”
Blending aesthetics
Finally, nothing says festive like weaving in the old with the new. Pairing a vintage silver diya with a sleek modern lamp, or placing an antique trunk next to a minimalist chair, is a way to honour the past while embracing today. “The soul of festive décor is balance — one strong statement is often more powerful than a dozen little ones,” Kripalani reminds us.
