Festive fashion tips: Style your festive sarees with these unique drapes and accessories for a statement look

For today’s fashion-conscious generation, the sari is back in vogue for its high adaptability across age groups, occasions, and even cultures. The versatility is precisely why the sari continues to reign as the most sought-after choice among Indian women.

The saree has always embodied grace, tradition, and timeless elegance. Yet in recent years, it has risen beyond being just a cultural staple and is transforming into a contemporary power statement that resonates across generations. Whether at boardrooms, global stages, or evening soirées, the saree communicates strength while staying rooted in heritage. This has also led to resurgence in the demand for sarees.

The shift in mindset has not only made the saree more accessible to younger generations but also established it as an outfit of authority and individuality and something that speaks volumes in professional and social spaces alike. Devangi Nishar Parekh, Managing Director at Aza Fashions explains, “The saree’s adaptability is what makes it resonate so strongly with a new generation.

Because a saree is essentially just a long piece of fabric, it can be draped in a myriad of different ways, and paired with almost any base or outer layer. We see our clients redefining the saree in professional and social spaces, embracing it as a symbol of confidence, individuality, and authority.”

Styling the new-age saree:

The renewed appeal of the saree lies in its versatility and the ease with which it adapts to modern styling. Pairing it with sharply tailored blouses, structured shirts, or even sleek jackets gives it an edge that bridges tradition with contemporary aesthetics. A cinched waist using a statement belt instantly transforms the drape into a powerful fashion-forward ensemble.

Parekh points out how innovation in draping has opened up endless possibilities. Sharing some interesting style tips, she says, “The petticoat can also be swapped out for pants to create a modern look. We now see most of our designers re-imagining the traditional silhouette with structured drapes, pre-stitched silhouettes, and edgy cuts to create looks that are versatile and global in appeal. When it comes to fabrics, luxe materials like silk and metallic weaves lend gravitas, while statement accessories such as belts, chokers, or sculptural jewellery introduce a modern, fashion-forward sensibility.”

From tradition to trendsetting:

At its heart, the saree continues to represent Indian identity and heritage. What has changed is its role as a canvas for experimentation. Designers are now pushing boundaries with pre-draped styles, metallic accents, cape overlays, and dramatic blouse cuts that feel global yet deeply rooted. What was once seen primarily as festive or ceremonial wear is now commanding attention in boardrooms, red carpets, and global runways.

Parekh notes the change in outlook for sarees and highlights, “Designers and wearers alike are experimenting with layering, unusual blouse cuts, and contemporary accents like belts or capes, creating looks that are both innovative and impactful. This reinvention is a reminder that tradition and modernity are not opposing forces. In fact, the sari proves they can coexist beautifully.”
