Many people take time out during the holiday season to give their house a deep cleaning, the first step in the process of a festive makeover. Be it the floors or the furniture, nothing is left out. However, switchboards are places that often get overlooked, despite the fact that they gather dust and grime, and are touched many times in a day. This Diwali, make your switchboards shine with these simple DIY tips and tricks which are inexpensive and safer than store-bought chemical cleaners.
Combine lemon and salt
Lemon and salt work as cleaning agents not just for kitchen utensils, but also for areas that accumulate dust and grime over time. Lemon contains citric acid which breaks down tough stains and salt acts as an abrasive. Together, they work effectively for cleaning the switchboards. Cut a lemon into half, dip it in salt and rub it on the surface, including the affected areas. Leave it for two minutes and gently wipe the surface with a cotton cloth.
Apply shaving cream
Shaving cream contains many active ingredients that are similar to the ones found in bar or liquid soap. Thus it acts as an effective cleaning agent. Apply a small amount of shaving cream on (and not inside) the switchboard with a toothbrush or a damp microfibre cloth. Gently scrub the area and use a dry microfibre cloth to clean the residue. Repeat the process, if needed.

Use nail paint remover for tough stains
When it comes to cleaning tough stains, especially ink marks or discolouration, a nail paint remover can be effective. Apply a small amount on a cotton ball or a soft cloth, and wipe the affected area. The acetone in nail paint remover will dissolve the stains and any marks. Repeat the process for a clean, shiny board.
It is important to be careful while cleaning the boards with a nail paint remover as it can affect the finish of painted surfaces. It’s also best to do a patch test on a switchboard placed behind furniture.
