Too much scrubbing, hot showers, and product overload are damaging your skin, says dermatologist

The skin barrier protects you from pollution, irritation, and moisture loss. However, your skincare routine, including over-exfoliation, using harsh cleansers, and product overload, might be doing more harm than good, here’s what dermatologists want you to know.

  • Overuse of acids and retinoids can damage the skin barrier and cause sensitivity
  • Cleanse gently, hydrate, and use sunscreen to repair and protect skin.
  • Avoid harsh cleansers, hot water, and product overload to maintain healthy skin

Skincare is not just about beauty, it’s also about protection. Skincare rituals are meant to protect and nourish. Gentle cleansing, hydration, sun protection, and respecting your skin barrier keep it healthy and glowing, while overuse of actives can cause irritation and sensitivity.

Many people layer acids, retinoids, and serums hoping for perfect skin. But dermatologists warn that sometimes these can leave your skin red, tight, and sensitive, a sign that the barrier is damaged. The skin barrier is the first line of defence against the environment, says Dr Rinky Kapoor, Co-Founder and Director of The Esthetic Clinics (TEC). “It keeps moisture in and irritants out. When it’s damaged, everything, from dryness to sensitivity, gets worse. Ironically, many people are the ones causing the damage themselves.”

From the use of chemical exfoliants to hot water, and well-meaning product combinations, the causes of damage are many. “While AHAs, BHAs, and retinoids can improve texture and tone, using them too frequently or layering multiple actives overwhelms the skin’s natural repair mechanisms.” As a result, one notices persistent stinging, flaking, and reactivity to even gentle products.

Dr Kapoor explains how daily routines can harm your skin barrier

Over-exfoliation

“Using multiple acids or retinoids at once is a fast track to barrier breakdown,” warns Dr. Kapoor. Dryness, stinging, and heightened sensitivity are clear red flags.

Hot water and harsh cleansers

Steaming hot water and foaming sulfate-based cleansers strip away natural oils. The lipid layer – including ceramides and fatty acids – takes a hit, leaving skin defenseless.

Product overload

More doesn’t mean better. Combining high-strength actives, like vitamin C with strong acids or retinoids, can spark irritation rather than deliver results.

Repairing what’s lost

Recovery begins with simplicity. Gentle cleansers, ceramide-rich moisturisers, and sunscreen form the backbone of a healing routine. Niacinamide is a barrier-friendly ingredient that strengthens skin without causing irritation.

She informs, “The strongest skin isn’t the most exfoliated or the most treated. It’s resilient skin with an intact barrier. Once you respect that, your skin can handle actives and environmental stressors much more gracefully.”
