If you have noticed your skin looking dull, patchy, or uneven, you can blame it on pollution. Air pollution is slowly harming your skin, and dermatologists warn that the problem is getting worse in cities like Delhi.

Air pollution is made up of very tiny particles: PM2.5, PM10, dust, smoke, bacteria, and gases like nitrogen dioxide and ozone. Dr Nirupama Parwanda, Dermatologist and Founder of Zolie Skin Clinic, tells Moneycontrol, “These particles don’t just settle on the skin, they penetrate deep, triggering in inflammation and causing your skin deteriorate from within. Delhi’s air pollution, combined with stress and UV exposure, is the main culprit behind the city’s rising skin pigmentation problems. Preventive skincare, antioxidants, and good sun protection help to maintain clear, healthy-looking skin, even amidst the city’s notorious haze.”

Once inside, pollutants release free radicals, unstable molecules that steal electrons from skin cells, leaving them damaged. The skin, in turn, tries to protect itself by producing more melanin, which leads to dark patches, dullness, and uneven skin tone. “It’s a survival mechanism, but the visible effect is patchy, discoloured skin,” the expert adds.

Dr Parwanda shares how pollution messes with your skin:

  • Weakens the skin barrier: Pollution strips away your natural defence, making skin highly sensitive to even normal sun exposure, which worsens dark spots and melasma-like patches.

  • Causes chronic inflammation: Constant exposure keeps skin stressed, slowing cell regeneration. Minor blemishes linger longer and turn darker over time.

  • Causes dryness and redness: Pollutants dehydrate, the skin, thus contributing to an uneven texture and appearance.

  • Oxidative damage: Free radicals from polluted air, may speed up ageing, and pigmentation

How to get clear skin

Dr Parwanda recommends a simple skincare routine to combat pollution: “A mild cleanser, moisturiser with ceramides or hyaluronic acid, and consistent sunscreen can go a long way. Sunscreen is crucial because the sun makes polluted skin even more sensitive. Antioxidants like vitamin C, vitamin E, and niacinamide help fight free radicals.” On particularly smoggy days, wash your face immediately after returning home to remove particles and avoid heavy occlusive products that trap pollutants on the skin.
