  • Squalene oil suits most skin types, but may not hydrate dry skin.
  • Rosehip oil is acne-friendly, but may irritate sensitive skin.
  • Jojoba oil is best for dry skin in winter, not for oily skin.

There’s a fear around facial oils, as many believe they can clog pores and look excessively shiny. But the truth is that they can help you in more ways than one. If chosen correctly, they can balance oil production, calm irritated skin, and even control breakouts.

Some of them contain just the right ingredients to make your skin feel healthy and look plump. Each serves a different purpose.

Dermatologist Dr Gurveen Waraich, in one of her Instagram videos, shared that “which face oil to use” is one of the most frequently asked questions by her patients. She mentioned three she considers safe to use on Indian skin without fear of congestion or acne.

Squalene oil

Dr Waraich called squalene oil one of her favourite oils. “It’s light-weight, non-comedogenic, suitable for almost all skin types, including oily, acne prone, and sensitive,” she said, but cautioned that it is quite hydrating but not deeply moisturising. So for people with dry skin, it may not feel enough.

Rosehip oil

Rosehip oil is yet another popular option. “Again, it is acne-friendly and non-comedogenic. In fact, it could improve your acne marks as well, but it might irritate very sensitive skin and is not as light weight as squalene, but still pretty light,” the dermatologist noted.

Jojoba oil

Quite a well-known oil, Dr Waraich recommended using jojoba oilin dry weather and winters because it could feel heavy in hot humidity and warned that it might trigger breakouts in very oily skin. “So I would keep jojoba oil for dry-to-combination skin in winters,” she said.

Benefits of face oils

Face oil can help nourish the skin beautifully. They seal moisture into the outer layer of the skin and keep it soft and healthy. Additionally, they strengthen the skin’s barrier and nourish it with antioxidants and fatty acids, making it look radiant and smooth.
