Lizards sneaking into rooms in summer, in search of insects, cooler spaces, dark corners, open areas, and cluttered spaces is not an uncommon sight. While they are harmless, their sudden presence creeping on the walls of a room can be unsettling.

Nowadays, there are many tactics with which they can be stopped from entering the house or removed if they are already inside. For this, you don’t need harsh chemicals or pest control services.

Here’s a list of natural, effective home remedies along with minor tweaks in the house that can be done to get rid of them.

  • Seal entry points: Lizards can sneak into the house through tiny gaps and holes. To keep them out, seal all possible entry points including windows, doors, and bathroom vents. Use plaster, install door sweeps, and mesh screens to keep them at bay.

  • Ensure cleanliness: Lizards are more likely to enter spaces that have insects, mosquitoes, flies, and ants. Ensure your house is well-cleaned at all times and dirty dishes are not left overnight. Empty trash bins daily and do not leave food or leftovers in the open.

  • Eliminate hiding spots: Lizards hide behind closets and shelves, and in other areas that are cluttered. Ensure cleaning is done from all sides, and declutter spaces by organising shelves and storing food in proper containers.

  • Use pepper spray: While there are several chemical sprays available, it’s best to use a simple mix of black pepper powder or chilli powder with water and spray it around potential areas from where you suspect they can enter. Reapply frequently for effective use.

  • Onions and garlic: Onions and garlic have natural odour in them that works as a natural repellent and keeps lizards away. Placing onions and garlic cloves at all possible entry points helps get rid of them naturally.

  • Peppermint oil: There are many essential oils like peppermint, eucalyptus, and others that can be applied on cotton balls or directly sprayed on areas where lizards can be spotted.

  • Eggshells: Yet again, the bad odour that stems from eggshells keeps lizards from entering the house. Placing them near doors, windows, and kitchen can prove to be quite effective.
  • Mothballs: Mothballs can be placed in closets and cabinets to keep lizards away. However, it comes with a safety hazard for kids and pets who need to be cautioned.
