  • Sikandar lost 10 kg on Mounjaro but felt less joy and motivation
  • Emotional flatness reversed after stopping the medication

GLP-1 drugs have begun to be used for more reasons than one. They work by imitating gut hormones released after meals and help regulate appetite and blood sugar levels. However, their side effects can vary and affect the brain and body in unexpected ways.

YouTuber Sikandar shared how he shed not just 10 kg on Mounjaro, but also lost his desire to have fun in life. In his video, he explained how the drug works on your body to help you shed weight and also on your brain, reducing your desire to seek pleasure, whether through drink, food, or elsewhere.

In the video, Sikandar revealed that he took entry level dosage, and began early December when he weighed 91.45 kg. His weight loss over the next month was rapid and he reached 84 kg. By February, he weighed 81 kg but wasn’t sure if he should continue. He was advised by friends to continue, as stopping the dose immediately is known to increase weight.

While Sikandar acknowledged a few hiccups along the way, he did share how working out and eating clean helped him eventually shed 10 kg in 10 weeks. However, the biggest twist he revealed was experiencing emotional flatness. “I am raw and open with friends, but I began to laugh forcefully at their jokes. My family sent pictures of celebrating Holi and I didn’t feel a thing. It feels like someone’s turned off the knob where you feel the intensity of emotions. Life is flat.”

The YouTuber revealed around this time he came across Dr Shin Geon‑yeong's post on X on experiencing emotional flatness on Mounjaro. His post read, “We initially thought GLP-1s like Ozempic, Tirzapeptide and Retatutride just reduced food cravings. Now, we know they work for alcohol, cocaine, gambling and other addictions too.”

“But do you know what runs on exactly the same circuit? Falling in love…GLP-1 receptors sit in the exact same brain regions that light up when you’re in love. The insane thing about them is that they don’t just suppress appetite. They suppress wanting in general, including romantic craving for another person,” Dr Geon-yeong continued.

Sikandar shared that he experienced exactly the same, and this was also confirmed by some anecdotal cases shared by Grok, xAI chatbot. Even the CEO of Eli Lilly and Company, David Ricks, who makes the drug, confirmed its anti-hedonic effect. The YouTuber shared that he has stopped taking the medication, and his desires are back, as is his zest for life. However, he cautioned those keen on taking the weight loss drug to consider his experience before making a decision.

FAQs on emotional flatness due to Mounjaro

1. What is emotional flatness while taking Mounjaro?

Emotional flatness refers to feeling emotionally “numb” or less able to experience joy, excitement, or emotional intensity. Some people, like Sikandar, describe it as life feeling flat or muted.

2. Why might Mounjaro cause emotional flatness?

Mounjaro is a GLP-1 drug that affects brain circuits involved in reward and “wanting”. As Dr Shin Geon‑yeong explained, these same circuits are linked to cravings, addictions, and even falling in love. By dampening these pathways, the drug may reduce overall desire and emotional intensity in some people.

3. Does everyone on Mounjaro experience emotional flatness?

No, emotional flatness is not reported by everyone using Mounjaro. Experiences vary widely. Sikandar’s story and other anecdotal reports highlight that it can happen, but it is not universal.

4. Can emotional flatness go away after stopping Mounjaro?

In Sikandar’s case, he shared that after stopping the medication, his emotions and desire to enjoy life returned within days. However, experiences can differ, and anyone considering stopping the drug should speak to their doctor first.

5. What should I do if I feel emotionally flat on Mounjaro?

If you notice a loss of pleasure, motivation, or emotional response while on Mounjaro, it’s important to discuss this with your healthcare provider. They can help you weigh the benefits and side effects and decide whether to adjust, continue, or discontinue the medication.
