Bakri Eid, or Eid al-Adha, marks the story of Prophet Ibrahim’s incredible faith and willingness to make a great sacrifice. From rich meat curries to sweet vermicelli and plates of fried snacks, the Eid table is a spectacular sight. But that doesn’t mean it’s a challenge to conquer. Gorging upon heavy foods can lead to fatigue, acid reflux, or worse, missing the afternoon nap.

7 things to remember when enjoying gourmet meals this Eid

Start with hydration: Before anything else, drink water. Your body’s been in detox mode all month. Begin with a glass of water or lemon water to wake up your system before the food floodgates open.

Watch the oil content: Fried kebabs and samosas are tasty, but too many can weigh you down. Choose baked or grilled options when you can, or balance fried items with lighter dishes like cucumber raita or salad.

Stick to small portions: You can go back for seconds, just don’t go all in on the first round. Small servings help you taste more without overeating. Plus, you’ll actually taste the food instead of just consuming it.

Avoid mixing too many rich dishes: Layering biryani with butter chicken, korma, and six chutneys might look fun, but it’s a recipe for indigestion. Stick to two mains per meal and space them out across the day.

Prioritise protein and fibre: Include lentils, grilled meat, or eggs for lasting energy. A bowl of lentil soup or chickpea salad can balance out the sugar rush from desserts.

Limit sugary drinks: Try to swap sweetened sherbets or fizzy drinks with fresh juices, coconut water, or simply flavoured water with mint and lemon. Keeps the bloat at bay and your energy steady.

Pause before dessert: You don’t have to skip dessert, just give your body a break. Take a short walk, sip water, and then enjoy that bowl of sweet dessert.
