Sherlyn Chopra recently shared a clip on Instagram where she spoke about getting her breast implants removed. Wondering why she took this decision? Well, apparently she experienced a slew of physical issues like pain in back, neck, chest and shoulder over a couple of months and after many consultations with experts, she decoded that it was all due to "heavy breast implants".

She said: "So, in my best interests and to restore agility, vitality, and stamina to my life, I've decided to have my breast implants removed once and for all."

It her clearly Chopra's personal decision and she made it clear that she was not criticizing fillers or silicon implants. She wrote, “In August 2023, I'd gotten all the fillers removed from my face to look like my authentic self. And today, I'm undergoing a breast implant removal surgery to live life with no excess baggage. This post isn't about criticising fillers and/or silicon implants and/or the lovers of the same. This post reflects purely my choice to embrace myself just the way I am.”

Moneycontrol's team reached out to Dr Anshumali Misra, Associate Director & Head–Plastic Surgery, Asian Hospital, to understand more about breast implant removal surgery and if there are potential downsides to it.

About Sherlyn Chopra's decision to remove breast implants

Speaking about Chopra's decision to get her implants removed, Dr Misra said, "Sherlyn Chopra's decision serves the perfect example that individuals can decide to reverse cosmetic procedures if they no longer align with their priorities, health conditions, or sense of self. Without doubt, it is important to note that such decisions are highly personal and not to be judged at all."

Can breast implants trigger physical ailments?

Dr Misra told Moneycontrol that breast implants, especially the bigger ones, may cause physical discomfort like back pain, neck pain or shoulder pain, because they add weight to the body. "Poor choice in the size of implants or their placement can lead to posture problems in the long run as well. In extreme situations, complications such as capsular contracture or nerve compression can contribute to the discomfort," he shared.

To avoid such problems, the doctor suggested that it is important to have follow-up consultations with a competent surgeon regularly.

Things to know before going for breast implant surgery

A lot of people get breast augmentation surgery done to feel more confident in their skin. However, what they must know before signing up for it is that they should be physically fit, have a realistic expectation and most importantly have a stable emotional attitude. "Getting breast implants should not be viewed as an antidote to body image issues," stressed Dr Misra.

Is breast implant removal surgery safe?

"Breast implant removal or an explant surgery is a relatively safe and easy operation done under anesthesia. The surgeon can remove the implants or they can also take away some surrounding scar tissue (capsulectomy), depending on what the patient wants. It usually requires several weeks and the start is characterised by mild swelling or pain. An elaborate pre-surgical evaluation and follow-up care program guarantees an easy and risk-free transition following removal," revealed Dr Misra.

Expected changes post removal of breast implants

The doctor told Moneycontrol that some people may report changes in the shape, firmness, or volume of the breast after removal of implants. "One of the common after effect is sagging or loose skin, especially if the implants were large in size or had been used over a long period. In other cases, I have seen patients choose to get a breast lift in order to regain shape. Short-lived pain, edema, or numbness is expected in the recovery process," he revealed.

Myths around breast implants
"There are indeed many myths around breast implants," said the doctor.

A: A commonly held myth is that they are never natural and they make it difficult to exercise. However, there's no truth to it, shared Dr Misra.
B: The other myth is that implants lead to breast cancer. To this, the doctor said no such link has been established.
C: The myth that the implants are lifelong is also not true, because they need monitoring and might have to be replaced in 10-15 years, the doctor told Moneycontrol.
