A norovirus outbreak has struck the Royal Caribbean cruise liner Serenade of the Seas, leaving nearly 100 passengers and crew members ill. The virus—often called the “stomach flu” or “stomach bug”—is highly contagious, causing sudden vomiting, diarrhoea, nausea, stomach pain, and dehydration. As cruises are at high risk for such contagious spread, knowing preventive measures can help you stay safe at sea.

What Is Norovirus?
Norovirus is a condition that causes acute gastroenteritis, or inflammation of the stomach and intestines. It spreads fast through:

  • Contaminated water or food
  • Contact with contaminated surfaces (elevator buttons, handrails, and shared utensils)
  • Close contact with infected individuals

The illness shows up usually 12 to 48 hours after exposure, Symptoms include:
  • Diarrhoea
  • Vomiting
  • Nausea
  • Stomach cramps
  • Fever or body aches
  • Headache
  • Signs of dehydration (dry mouth, fainting, low urine, etc.)

If left unchecked and untreated, dehydration can become serious, especially for children, older adults, or those with weakened immunity.

Why are Cruise Ships at Risk

In essence, cruise ships are floating cities, with:

  • A large number of people in close proximity
  • Common facilities like elevators, handrails, and buffets
  • Common areas and group meals
  • Large crew and guest turnover

These circumstances facilitate the rapid spread of viruses such as norovirus. In this outbreak, over 94 passengers and 4 crew members fell ill as Serenade of the Seas made its journey from San Diego, starting September 19, heading toward Miami. The US Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) confirmed the total.

6 Smart Tips to Stay Safe During a Cruise

1. Wash hands often

Use soap and water, especially before eating and after using the restroom.

2. Avoid touching shared surfaces unnecessarily

Handrails, elevator buttons, buffet utensils — be more cautious.

3. Use serving utensils, not your hands

Don’t grab food with your fingers. Prefer freshly cooked items over buffet salads.

4. Don’t share drinks or plates

Even among loved ones, avoid sharing utensils, glasses, or plates.

5. Stay hydrated

Vomiting and diarrhoea can deplete fluids quickly. Sip water or electrolyte drinks.

6. Isolate when symptoms start

If you feel unwell, alert the ship’s medical centre. Stay in your cabin and follow medical advice.

If you see others fall ill, try to keep your distance. Notify cruise staff so they can take action.
