Is poha healthy for you?

According to Ruchika Jain, chief dietitian at Fortis Hospital, Vasant Kunj, poha is a healthy meal if prepared the right way. "It is made of flattened rice and is normally low in calorie content. Poha has carbohydrates fibre, and other vital nutrients such as iron and B vitamins," she says, adding, "Poha is also a good energy source and may stimulate digestion if mixed with healthy foods such as vegetables, nuts and seeds. If you make it with less oil and add vegetables, it can be a well-balanced nutrient-rich food."

Should you eat poha daily?

Having poha on a daily basis is okay if you like it and make it with a combination of vegetables and a reasonable quantity of oil. Jain says, "A balanced diet with a diversity of foods should be maintained. Over-dependence on a single food product would restrict the variety of nutrients you take through your food."

If you are having other whole grains, proteins and vegetables in combination throughout the day, poha can become a daily part of your diet. However, Jain advises that everything should be consumed in moderation and in balance for overall health.
