Health authorities are urging caution after a confirmed measles case was linked to the Shakira concert at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey, on May 15, 2025. The New Jersey Department of Health (NJDOH) confirmed that the infected person, a non-New Jersey resident, was contagious while attending the concert, raising concerns about potential exposure among thousands of fans. The exposure occurred between 7:30 PM on May 15 and 1:00 AM on May 16 at MetLife Stadium, a venue that hosted thousands for Shakira’s high-energy performance.

Here’s everything you need to know about symptoms, risks, and what to do next.

Measles is highly contagious and spreads through the air via coughing and sneezing. Because the virus can linger in the air for up to two hours, even those who did not have close contact with the infected person may be at risk. The NJDOH is now alerting residents, mainly the unvaccinated, to remain vigilant for symptoms and avoid spreading the illness further.

Symptoms of measles

Measles symptoms typically develop 7 to 14 days after exposure, meaning concertgoers could become ill as late as June 6, 2025. Measles symptoms often start with a high fever, followed by a dry cough, runny nose, red, watery eyes, and a rash that begins at the hairline and spreads downward.

Other signs include fatigue and body aches. Complications can include pneumonia, brain swelling, and pregnancy-related risks like miscarriage or early labour.

Risk of infection:

Those most at risk include people who haven’t had both doses of the MMR vaccine, babies under 12 months, pregnant individuals, those with weakened immune systems, and unvaccinated international travellers.

If you attended the Shakira concert, monitor for symptoms until 6 June, check your vaccination status, and contact your GP if symptoms appear; always call before visiting a clinic. Keep vulnerable people, especially children and older people, informed and protected. The NJDOH is not reporting additional cases, but awareness and quick action are key. Measles is preventable, and vaccination remains the best defence.
