For many, monsoon is a time for long drives with cool breezes, but just as beautiful and green as it is, it also has health challenges. Moist, humid conditions allow bacteria, viruses and fungi to grow, which have been shown to increase the risk of infections and seasonal illnesses. Diseases and sickness are common — cold, cough, fever, respiratory infections, waterborne and vector-borne diseases like dengue, malaria and cholera.
However, there are certain health-related after-effects of the monsoons which we do not know, but it is important to know them. One of them is its impact on sex drive, particularly on male fertility.

Seasonal impact of male fertility
A recently published study conducted among seasonal effects on semen parameters affecting male fertility found that male fertility was significantly higher during the winter season, whereas it showed the lowest results in the monsoon. The study, titled ‘Seasonal Effects on Semen Parameters Affecting Male Fertility’ and published in the International Journal of Infertility & Fetal Medicine, was conducted among more than 1000 men in India. It was found that the total motility of the sperm (ability of the sperm cells to move effectively) was significantly low in monsoon compared to other seasons such as winter, summer and autumn.
While the study observed that sperm count, total motility, progressive motility, and morphology were the lowest during the monsoon season, the volume of semen was not affected by the weather.
Factors contributing to lower semen quality
According to Dr Amol Wankhede, Infertility Specialist, Apollo Fertility, Thane, there are several reasons that the semen quality would lower during the monsoon season. This could range from illnesses to changes in temperature and humidity.
Precautions for men
In order to increase the chances of conception and to ensure a healthy semen quality, men should consider taking the following precautions
