Toenail fungus, also known as onychomycosis, is a common fungal infection that affects the toenails. It typically begins as a white or yellow spot under the tip of the toenail and can spread deeper into the nail, causing it to discolour, thicken, and crumble at the edges. The condition can affect multiple nails and, if left untreated, can cause pain and permanent damage to the nails. It may also lead to other serious infections, especially in individuals with weakened immune systems or diabetes.

There are several natural ways to treat toenail fungus

Oregano oil

Properties: Contains thymol, which has antifungal properties.

Application: Mix a few drops of oregano oil with a carrier oil (like olive oil) and apply to the affected area once or twice a day, suggests Noida-based dermatologist Ishika Tandon.

Cider vinegar

Properties: The acidity of vinegar can help to prevent the fungus from spreading.

Application: Soak the affected foot in a mixture of one part apple cider vinegar and one part water for 30 minutes daily. Dry the foot thoroughly afterward, says Tandon.

Garlic

Properties: Garlic has antifungal and antimicrobial properties.

Application: Crush a few garlic cloves and apply the paste to the affected area. Leave it on for 30 minutes before rinsing off. Alternatively, you can take garlic supplements as directed by a healthcare provider.

Coconut oil

Properties: Contains caprylic acid, which has antifungal properties.

Application: Apply a thin layer of coconut oil to the affected area two to three times a day.

Baking soda

Properties: Has antifungal properties and can help neutralise foot odour.

Application: Create a paste by mixing baking soda with water and apply it to the affected nails. Leave it on for 10-15 minutes before rinsing off. Repeat twice daily.

Epsom salt

Properties: Helps to soothe the skin and may have antifungal effects.

Application: Dissolve Epsom salt in warm water and soak your feet for 15-20 minutes daily.

Probiotics:

Properties: Help to restore the balance of good bacteria in the body, which can combat fungal infections.

Application: Consume probiotic-rich foods like yogurt or take probiotic supplements.
