Diwali: 6 expert tips for smart eating during and after the festivities

Diwali is all about togetherness, festivities, lights and of course delicious food — and it’s also when the diets often go out of the window. Nutty sweets to fried savouries, indulging in festivities can leave you feeling bloated, acidic and tired.

Diwali, a festival of lights, is filled with family time and laughter accompanied by a spread of traditional treats. From laddoos and jalebis to samosas and namakpare, it’s hard to resist the festive menu. But this season of festivities can easily become associated with excess, and many people end up experiencing widespread digestive problems like acidity, bloating and sluggishness.

People eat more, heavy fried stuff and do not eat their regular meals, which can overload the digestive system in Diwali. Factor in late-night feasting, alcohol and less exercise and it’s the perfect storm for feeling lousy. Nutrition experts say it is possible to have your merry meals and enjoy them without wrecking your health — by balancing indulgence with moderation and making savvy choices.

“You don’t have to avoid sweets altogether in order to eat healthy during Diwali,” says Dr Raima Mehra, a senior nutritionist who runs her own brand — Revive Global — based out of Delhi. “It’s a part of portion control, conscious eating, and not overwhelming your digestive system. There are a few simple things you can do to have a merry time and celebrate with no strings attached — and without the guilt or upset stomach afterward.”

Simple ways to enjoy your food this Diwali with smart eating strategies

  • Begin Your Day Refreshed and Hydrated:

Start with a cup of warm water with lemon or cumin seeds to enhance digestion. Don’t skip breakfast; having something light and healthy like oats, poha, or fruit keeps your metabolism in check before a day filled with indulgence.
  • Practice Portion Control:

One can go overboard during the holidays, after all. Take small servings of your favorite cozies. Use small plates. And remember, the tasting thing is not the same as eating a lot.
  • Choose Healthier Sweets and Snacks:

Make some traditional preparations with a healthy twist: go for jaggery over sugar, bake rather than fry and use whole grains instead of refined flour. Even dry fruits and nuts can be your guilt-free festive bites.
  • Eat Slowly and Mindfully:

Savor every bite. You might end up overeating and have indigestion. Chewing food well allows the nutrients to be absorbed more efficiently by your body and for proper digestion.

  • Stay Active and Move More:

A short promenade after eating, does much towards aiding digestion and preventing that after-dinner lassitude. Likewise, any light exercise like dancing while attending a family celebration or going for a walk with your family will keep your metabolism active.
  • Limit Alcohol and Sugary Drinks:

He added that holiday drinks can also be a source of empty calories and sugar. Opt for water, coconut water and herbal teas instead and stay hydrated.

Diwali is about joy, gratitude and togetherness — not sheer excess. Sometimes it takes a little mindfulness in your approach to feasting that allows you to enjoy these holiday treats without sacrificing healthfulness. And healthy habits aren’t about taking away from the fun, Dr Mehra emphasizes — they’re about allowing you to feel lighter, happier and more energized during the festival itself.
