You love coconut water and other fruity coolers to beat the rising temperatures. But have you tried ice apple yet? Traditionally enjoyed for its natural cooling effect, this translucent, jelly-like fruit is now catching the attention of nutrition researchers. Experts say it’s time we start recognising its wider health benefits, including skin health to blood sugar control.

According to a study in the PubMed, Borassus flabellifer L., commonly called Asian palmyra or ice apple, is a popular summer fruit in South and Southeast Asia. In parts of India, it’s known as nungu and has been enjoyed for generations, especially during hot weather.

The scientists found the fruit was packed with amino acids, vitamins, healthy fats, plant compounds like flavonoids, and even some rare minerals. One interesting finding was that the green variety of ice apple had more amino acids than the black one.

Research suggests that ice apple is good for preventing heatstroke, and its bioactive compounds have shown anti-inflammatory and blood sugar-regulating effects. Recent studies have also identified amino acids, antioxidants, and anti-diabetic properties in ice apple’s tender fruit endosperm. Plus, it’s low in calories and high in fibre, making it a smart snack for those watching their weight.

Here are the health benefits of ice apples:

  • Keeps body temperature low: Ice apple naturally cools the body from within, making it ideal during intense summer heat. It prevents dehydration and reduces the risk of heat-related illnesses like sunstroke and migraines.

  • Aids digestion gently: High in dietary fibre, nungu helps improve digestion and eases constipation. Its water content further supports bowel regularity and soothes an irritated stomach.

  • Helps in weight management: Low in calories yet filling due to its water and fibre content, ice apple makes a smart snack for people trying to shed weight without feeling hungry all the time.

  • Improves skin health: Thanks to its vitamins, antioxidants and anti-inflammatory compounds, ice apple can soothe skin irritations, combat acne flare-ups, and support a natural glow during harsh weather.

  • Balances blood sugar: Studies on both humans and animals suggest that ice apple extracts can help regulate blood sugar levels, making it a good choice for people with or at risk of diabetes.

  • Supports electrolyte balance: Rich in potassium and sodium, ice apple can help restore lost electrolytes after workouts, illnesses, or long days in the sun.

  • Reduces inflammation: The presence of flavonoids and phenolic compounds gives ice apple natural anti-inflammatory properties that may help with internal swelling and minor infections.

  • Boosts immunity: With a mix of vitamin C and antioxidants, regular consumption of nungu can strengthen your immune defences, especially during seasonal transitions.

  • Eases migraine symptoms: For people who get migraines triggered by heat or dehydration, ice apple’s natural cooling and hydrating effect may bring some much-needed relief.
