Eggs have often been a topic of debate when it comes to heart health and cholesterol. However, recent research sheds light on their potential benefits for older adults. A study from Monash University highlights that moderate egg consumption helps reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease-related mortality, especially in healthy older people. Packed with essential nutrients, eggs could play a vital role in promoting heart health and longevity.

Eggs and longevity in older adults:

A recent study published in the scientific journal Nutrients analyses data from 8,756 adults aged 70 years or older as part of the ASPREE Longitudinal Study of Older Persons (ALSOP). Participants self-reported their egg consumption habits ranging from rarely/never to daily intake.

“The findings revealed that older adults who consumed eggs 1-6 times per week had a 15 percent lower risk of dying from any cause and a 29 percent lower risk of cardiovascular disease-related mortality compared to those who rarely ate eggs. These results suggest that adding eggs to the diet in moderation could contribute to better longevity and heart health in the elderly population,” says Holly Wild, PhD Candidate and Lecturer at Monash University.

Nutritional value and heart health:

Eggs are a powerhouse source of essential nutrients, including protein, B vitamins, folate, unsaturated fatty acids, and vital minerals. “This makes eggs an affordable and accessible option, especially for older adults,” suggests Wild. She explains that eggs provide protein of high biological value, which is vital for maintaining muscle mass in people who are ageing. “Additionally, the combination of healthy fats and antioxidants in eggs contributes to improved heart health, cognitive function, and general vitality, making them a beneficial dietary addition for older adults,” she adds.

Daily diet, cholesterol, and moderation:

While egg consumption is often linked to cholesterol concerns, the study indicates that moderate intake within a high-quality diet can offer protective effects. “Older adults with moderate to high diet quality who consumed eggs regularly were found to have a 33-44 percent lower risk of cardiovascular death. Even among those with high cholesterol (dyslipidemia), and ones who consumed eggs at least weekly showed a 27 percent lower risk of CVD-related death,” Wild says.

Health guidelines recommend limiting egg consumption to no more than seven eggs per week for people with normal cholesterol levels, informs Wild. “However, those with pre-existing conditions should seek medical advice before making dietary changes,” she suggests.

Moreover, the study indicates that moderate egg consumption, as part of a balanced diet, can support heart health and longevity in older adults. “Eggs provide essential nutrients that improve your well-being while posing minimal risk to heart health when consumed in moderation. However, those with high cholesterol or pre-existing health conditions should consult their doctor before increasing egg intake,” warns Wild.
