Drinking soda with meals? Nutritionist warns it can lead to weight gain, gut health issues and even diabetes

It is not unusual to see someone drinking a soda with their meal. While it makes for a refreshing accompaniment, it doesn’t aid digestion as most Indian men believe. In fact, several studies show that consumption of soft drinks disrupts your gut health, besides leading to weight gain and the risk of chronic illnesses like diabetes.

Nutritionist Suman Agarwal took to her Instagram account on November 5 and clarified that these sodas are not beneficial for the digestive health of men. “Indian men should stop drinking soda for their digestive issues. Cramps, gas, or acidity—the first thing that comes to your mind is to drink soda. Many have this habit of having soda along with their meal or after their meal,” she said.

How does soda disrupt your health?

While many Indian men think that it serves as a quick fix for their upset stomach, it does the opposite. It disturbs their digestive system even more. “The carbonation and artificial additives present in soda can cause acidity and bloating. Soda is not just bad for your stomach; it also disrupts your gut microbiome, promoting the growth of harmful bacteria and yeast, and this increases the inflammation in your gut.”

Best anti-inflammatory drinks instead of sodas

Suman shared that as Indians, we have many better alternatives at home instead of sodas.

Ajwain with water: She highly recommended ajwain, as it contains thymol, which increases the production of gastric juices and reduces bloating. “You can have half a teaspoon or one teaspoon. Chew it and gulp it with some warm water,” she shared.

Ginger Tea: It is another powerful digestive aid. Known for its anti-inflammatory properties, ginger can soothe the stomach lining. Take one teaspoon of ginger and add it to boiling water. Boil it for a few minutes. Switch off the gas, then add a few drops of lime and a teaspoon of honey. And here’s your fantastic anti-inflammatory drink ready. You can add a pinch of turmeric to make the concoction even better.
