In the ever-expanding world of alternative nutrition, one unconventional contender is a creating a buzz—cockroach milk. Touted as a high-protein, nutrient-dense superfood, this unusual substance has sparked curiosity among wellness enthusiasts.

But is it really the next big thing in health, or just another trend crawling into the spotlight?

What is cockroach milk?

Cockroach milk is not your typical dairy alternative. It comes from the Diploptera punctata, also known as the Pacific beetle cockroach—the only roach species that gives birth to live young roaches. To nourish its offspring, this insect produces a milk-like secretion packed with protein-rich crystals.

According to a 2016 study published in the International Union of Crystallography Journal, cockroach milk contains three times more energy than cow's milk and four times more than buffalo milk.

This discovery has led researchers to consider it a potential future food source, particularly for those seeking sustainable protein alternatives.

Is it actually good for you?

Ashlesha Joshi, senior nutritionist at Tone30 Pilates, acknowledges the nutritional value of cockroach milk but remains cautious. "It's incredibly nutrient-dense, with a full amino acid profile, essential fats and slow-releasing carbohydrates. However, the lack of human studies and regulatory approvals makes it more of a scientific curiosity than a practical food source at this stage."

Potential benefits include high-quality protein and slow energy release. "Cockroach milk provides complete proteins, making it ideal for muscle recovery and growth. The milk crystals break down gradually, offering sustained energy—potentially useful for athletes or those with high energy demands," Joshi advises.

At the same time it is a sustainable food source. "Unlike dairy farming, insect-based nutrition requires fewer resources, making it an environmentally-friendly alternative," Joshi adds.

However, Joshi stresses that more research is needed before cockroach milk can be considered a mainstream dietary option.

While it may be packed with nutrients, cockroach milk isn't for everyone.

Individuals with shellfish allergies, pregnant or breastfeeding women, people with digestive sensitivities, or those with cultural and ethical concerns must exercise caution.

"Due to potential cross-reactivity, people allergic to shrimps, crab or lobster may experience adverse reactions. Some may also experience bloating or nausea due to the unfamiliar protein structure," Joshi says, adding, "Many cultures and dietary practices prohibit insect consumption, making cockroach milk a non-starter for some."

There are also unknown long-term health effects associated with the consumption of cockroach milk. "Without extensive human studies, the long-term implications remains uncertain. Since it is not yet mass-produced or FDA-approved, concerns exist," Joshi explains.

While cockroach milk may hold promise as a futuristic protein source, it is far from becoming a staple in our diets. Joshi advises those intrigued by alternative proteins to look at other insect-based foods such as cricket protein, which have undergone more research and regulatory approval.

"It's always exciting to explore new frontiers in nutrition, but until we have more concrete evidence, cockroach milk is best left as an interesting concept rather than a dietary revolution," Joshi concludes.
