Technology is an inescapable part of modern childhood, the unit said, changing as well how kids learn, play and take on the world. Devices such as smartphones, laptops and tablets have become part of the fabric of schools, homes and social life. They entertain, inform and offer new modes of communication. But with convenience comes a hidden worry: kids’ health.

Long periods hunched over computers create bad habits that impact the health of spines, necks and shoulders and hips. The human animal is built to move, yet when children engage in screen use, they become sedentary and un-naturally postured for extended periods. Over time, this behavior weakens the muscles, stresses ligaments and mismatches the spine.

The results aren't always immediate, but can result in a permanent pain in the neck, shoulders that are hunched over from years of bad posture and countless amounts of money spent on doctor visits to resolve the most chronic discomfort. “Studies have shown that long hours spent gazing at gadgets could be the reason behind postural deformity and also decrease in core muscle strength among growing children,” says Dr Neeraj Gupta, Senior Consultant - Paediatric Orthopaedics at the CK Birla Hospital®, Delhi

So with children and teens more dependent on digital gadgets than ever, parents, and educators need to be aware of the dangers of screen overuse. By promoting equal screen time and physical activity, many posture related health concerns can be prevented before they become chronic.

1. Spine issues

Prolonged sitting in a twisted posture while working on machines can cause the spine to become misaligned. This, in the long run, causes pain, stiffness, and difficulty sitting in good body posture.

2. Scoliosis (sideways curvature of the spine)

Excessive use of gadgets, especially if a child tilts to one side or sits crookedly, can lead to scoliosis. Scoliosis refers to abnormal lateral curvatures of the spine that lead to imbalance and noticeable postural deviation.

3. Kyphosis (hunchback posture)

Ergot strain due to leaning forward habitually to look at a screen impacts the upper region of the spine. Forward curving of the back and habitual look as a hump caused by long-term practice result in kyphosis. Not only does it damage looks but also causes chronic pain.

4. Neck pain and spasm

"Tech neck" is becoming common in children who hold their heads in the forward bent position while holding mobiles. It leads to spasms, stiffness, and pain in the neck that increase with time if there is no correction of posture.

5. Risk of torticollis

Too much bad gadget posture over extended periods of time can cause torticollis in children, where the neck is abnormally and, in certain instances, half-permanently twisted to one side. It can take a huge toll on mobility and quality of life if not caught early.

6. Muscle weakness and joint strain

Loss of movement when using gadgets weakens the core muscles and puts strain on joints repetitively. It is a causative factor for chronic pain and an undesirable posture.

Overuse of gadgets is not just an eye or mental issue but also a direct causative factor for posture and musculoskeletal disorders among children. Regular breaks, proper sitting posture, outdoor play, and exercises will eliminate these posture-related disorders.
