It is important to understand that if diabetes is not controlled, it can severely damage kidneys silently over time, as the high levels of glucose in the blood may damage the delicate vessels that filter the wastes from the body. Though the glucose levels are controlled through medicines, the right kind of diet plays an equally important role in the prevention of damage to the kidneys, as improper food habits, too much salt, and less water may damage the kidneys.
According to Dr Aswini Panigrahi, Nephrologist, MBBS.MD, DNB. (Nephrology), Apollo Dialysis, the right kind of diet plays an important role in slowing the progression of the damage to the kidneys and one must ensure that they are avoiding common diet mistakes that many of us don’t even notice.
Eating too much salt is a frequent dietary error. Packaged foods, snacks, pickled items, and prepared meals that have been processed often contain excessive amounts of sodium. If an individual consumes too much sodium, it can elevate blood pressure. Additionally, when blood pressure is elevated, there is more stress placed on the kidneys. Over time, this increased pressure on the kidneys can contribute to further damaging the kidneys.

Another error made by many people is consuming a significant amount of processed foods. Processed foods include potato chips, instant oatmeal, frozen dinners, and packaged meats. These foods typically contain high amounts of sodium, unhealthy fats, and preservatives. These ingredients are not benefitting to diabetics and may also have a negative impact on the health of the kidneys.
Some people will also unnecessarily have high-protein diets without proper guidance from a qualified medical professional. Protein is essential for normal bodily function; however, consuming large amounts of protein can add additional strain to the kidneys. For those with diabetes and/or early signs of kidney dysfunction, consuming an excessive amount of protein can lead to further kidney dysfunction.
Another area of concern is the consumption of too much sugar or refined carbohydrates (such as white bread, candy, sugary beverages, and baked goods). Eating too much sugar and/or refined carbohydrates can cause blood sugar to spike quickly, which could lead to long-term complications such as kidney failure.
Some foods provide a variety of benefits that contribute to good health, and decrease your chances of developing complications from your condition. Some examples of these would be: leafy greens, whole grains, small amounts (recommendations include one tablespoon per day) of nuts, and fresh/uncooked fruit.
It is equally important to limit your intake of salt, sugar-sweetened beverages, package (processed) snack foods, and fried foods.
People who have diabetes must pay extra attention to their diets. It is not enough to just eat well; they must also monitor their blood sugar regularly, visit their doctor often for check-ups, and have tests done on how their kidneys are working.
To keep your kidneys healthy and avoid having severe complications later in life, it is important to receive prompt treatment and make wise decisions that promote good health.
1. Why is excessive salt intake harmful to diabetics?

While protein is essential, too much protein can strain the kidneys, especially in diabetics or those with early kidney dysfunction.
4. What is the risk of consuming too much sugar or refined carbohydrates?
These can cause quick blood sugar spikes, leading to long-term complications such as kidney failure.
5. What dietary changes can help protect the kidneys?
Limiting salt, avoiding processed foods, cooking at home, eating a balanced diet, consuming moderate protein, and staying hydrated are key steps.
