The onset of winter sees a rise in flu and infections that are hard to get rid of for days. While there are many good old practices like layering up when stepping out and taking care of hygiene, among others, that come into practical use at this time, there’s a list of things you can do to protect yourself.
Cardiologist Dr Dmitry Yaranov took to his Instagram account and shared his top tips to avoid catching a cold this winter. He added that it’s not just science-backed but also ancient wisdom passed on by his mother. “The science is real, but the wisdom is old. My mother knew this before cardiology confirmed it,” he wrote.
1. Layer up: There’s no better way to protect yourself from the cold than layering up before it’s too late.
2. Keep your feet warm: Warm feet help circulation. Wearing socks is always a good idea.

4. Warm tea: Warm tea in the morning can help you stay cosy, not just endless coffee.
5. Sauna: He called the sauna a great option but cautioned hydrating before and after to avoid dehydration.
6. Contrast shower: This can be done only when you feel strong. “If you’re tired, stick to warm,” he added.
7. Sleep: He called it “immune training.” A well-rested body has a better ability to fight off infections.
8. Avoid caffeine at night: If you want quality sleep, avoid drinking coffee at night. “Don’t trade nights for caffeine and hope,” the cardiologist said.

11. Physical hygiene: Keep your hand hygiene simple and consistent. He added it shouldn’t be obsessive, just routine.
12. Distance from the sick: It’s best to keep your distance from someone who is sick, especially if you’re over 60 or have heart or lung disease.
13. Ventilation: It’s important to ventilate your home once a day to keep the air fresh.
14. Listen to your body: Don’t ignore body signals; slow down and take care of yourself.
