The recently released film Rekhachithram, starring Anaswara and Asif Ali, has been widely praised for its compelling storyline and innovative use of AI technology. Following its successful OTT release, the film continues to garner appreciation, though some fans have pointed out an interesting omission in its AI-driven sequences.
A particular scene in the film, recreated from the 1985 classic Kathodu Kathoram, features an AI-generated young Mammootty. In the original film, the song sequence included Lizzy (as Sister Theresa) and Saritha (as Marykutty) singing alongside Mammootty.
However, in Rekhachithram, only Mammootty’s younger version was digitally recreated, leading some viewers to question why AI wasn’t used to depict Lizzy and Saritha as well.
One user on social media sarcastically remarked that the director seemed to prioritize Mammootty while overlooking Lizzy and Saritha. However, others defended the filmmakers, suggesting that securing permission from the two actresses might have been a challenge.
Addressing the issue in an interview with Onmanorama, director Jofin T Chacko clarified that the decision was intentional, citing the complexities involved in AI recreation. "People assume that using AI to recreate characters is easy, but it’s far more complicated than it seems. We made a conscious choice not to digitally recreate all the characters from Kathodu Kathoram," he explained.
The Malayalam film Rekhachithram follows suspended cop Vivek Gopinath, who returns to duty after a gambling scandal. Assigned to investigate a 40-year-old murder case with an unidentified victim, he embarks on a journey for redemption, determined to solve the long-standing mystery.
