Sridevi was Bollywood's first female superstar

In an industry historically dominated by male leads, Sridevi emerged as a phenomenon who not only held her own, but often eclipsed her male co-stars. She began acting at the age of four in the Tamil film Kandhan Karunai and went on to conquer four major film industries — Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam, and Hindi, before cementing her position as Bollywood’s first true female superstar.

Bollywood breakthrough

Her full-fledged Bollywood debut was Solva Sawan (1979). Sridevi had already been a leading lady in the South. But it was Himmatwala (1983) with Jeetendra that catapulted her into nationwide fame. The film’s massive success made her the highest-paid actress of the era, a position she retained for over a decade.

Versatility like no other

Her versatility remains unmatched. Whether it was the innocence in Sadma (1983), the comic genius of ChaalBaaz (1989), the romance of Chandni (1989), or the grandeur of Mr India (1987), Sridevi could transform herself completely for a role. Looking at her craft, directors and producers began tailoring scripts around her characters.

The ultimate style icon

Sridevi also redefined what it meant to be a style icon in Indian cinema. Her chiffon saris in Chandni, vibrant looks in Lamhe (1991), and playful costumes in Mr India became instant trends.

A timeless comeback

After a 15-year hiatus, her comeback with English Vinglish (2012) proved her magic was timeless. The film’s global acclaim reaffirmed her cross-generational appeal. Even her final performance in MOM (2017) showcased the same emotional intensity that had defined her career.

Box office queen

What truly set Sridevi apart was her box office pull that was rare for a female star in the ’80s and ’90s. She was one of the few actresses whose name could guarantee a film’s success, even in the absence of a big male lead.

Sridevi’s passing in 2018 left a void that the industry still feels, but her legacy as Bollywood’s first female superstar remains unshakable.
