On March 18, celebrated as the birth anniversary of the iconic Shashi Kapoor, we reflect on a significant moment in Hindi cinema that involved him and actress Zeenat Aman. In an era when Hindi cinema was still exploring its boundaries with romance and intimacy, a single moment from "Satyam Shivam Sundaram" quietly shifted the conversation. Zeenat Aman’s first on-screen kiss with Shashi Kapoor did not just stay confined to the film’s narrative; it spilled into public discourse and became a talking point across the country.
Decades later, Zeenat revisited that moment with surprising warmth and clarity. Sharing a clip from the film on Instagram, she explained why that particular scene still holds meaning for her. “It was a big moment in my career. It was my first on-screen kiss, and though it caused an uproar at the time, it’s quite chaste,” she wrote, instantly transporting audiences back to a time when even a restrained romantic gesture could spark debate.
In the late 1970s, Hindi cinema was far more conservative in its portrayal of physical intimacy. Even hand-holding or prolonged eye contact often carried more weight than explicit gestures. What makes the moment even more layered is Zeenat Aman’s personal connection to Shashi Kapoor. Long before she became a star herself, she had admired him from afar. “With those twinkling eyes and handsome features, Shashi Kapoor was every Indian schoolgirl’s fantasy! Myself included,” she shared. Her memory of watching him as a teenager during his theatre days in Panchgani adds a charming, almost cinematic irony to the story.

She recalled how she and her friends would invent reasons to step out in the evenings, just to catch a glimpse of him. “My girlfriends and I, quite in the tizzy of youth, spent an entire winter break convincing our parents we needed fresh air… all we were hoping for was a glimpse of the movie star in his shorts!” she wrote, painting a vivid picture of youthful admiration. Years later, that admiration turned into collaboration. When they finally worked together, Zeenat discovered a different side of the man she had once idolised. “I found myself in the company of a cheeky, intelligent and charming man. He was quick with both quip and smile,” she said, highlighting the ease that defined their professional equation.
That comfort translated onto the screen. Despite the cultural weight of the scene, Zeenat revealed she felt no awkwardness while filming it. "I know I've already covered Satyam Shivam Sundaram a fair bit, but I chose to share this clip with you for two reasons. Firstly, it was a big moment in my career. It was my first on-screen kiss, and though it caused an uproar at the time, it's quite chaste. I truly did not have a moment of discomfort while shooting it. Secondly, because schoolgirl Zeenat would be thrilled by the audacity of this post, and the realisation that a schoolgirl crush can actualise even if only for celluloid!" said the 73-year-old actress.
Shashi Kapoor, a legendary figure in Indian cinema, passed away on December 4, 2017, at the age of 79. The actor, who had graced the silver screen for decades, succumbed to a prolonged illness at Kokilaben Dhirubhai Ambani Hospital in Mumbai. His demise marked the end of an era, leaving behind a legacy that continues to inspire generations of actors and filmmakers.
