For fans of the Wizarding World, this year’s Back to Hogwarts Day brought with it a magical surprise. Warwick Davis, who won hearts as Professor Filius Flitwick in the original Harry Potter films, will once again don the wizard’s robes for HBO’s upcoming television reboot.
The series, which is set to premiere on HBO and HBO Max in 2027, will retell J.K. Rowling’s book saga with greater depth, exploring storylines that never made it into the films.
Davis’ return marks a rare link between the beloved film franchise and the new series. So far, he is the only actor confirmed to reprise their original role, giving longtime fans a sense of continuity as a fresh cast steps into the world of Hogwarts.
HBO also revealed a wave of new casting announcements. Among the Hogwarts students are Elijah Oshin as Dean Thomas, Finn Stephens as Vincent Crabbe, and William Nash as Gregory Goyle. The staff will feature Sirine Saba as Professor Pomona Sprout, Richard Durden as the ghostly Professor Cuthbert Binns, and Bríd Brennan as Madam Poppy Pomfrey. Over at Gringotts, Leigh Gill has been cast as the goblin Griphook.
They will join the already announced main cast, including new faces for Harry, Hermione and Ron. Big names also feature in the line-up: John Lithgow as Albus Dumbledore, Janet McTeer as Professor Minerva McGonagall, Paapa Essiedu as Severus Snape, and Nick Frost as Hagrid.
For Davis, the role of Flitwick is one of many standout performances in a career that has also taken him through the Star Wars saga, the cult Leprechaun horror series, and the fantasy epic Willow. In the original Potter films, he also played the goblin Griphook — though this time, the role has been recast.

Behind the camera, the series is in the hands of Francesca Gardiner, who serves as writer and executive producer. Director Mark Mylod will helm multiple episodes, with production backed by HBO, Warner Bros. Television, and Brontë Film and TV. Rowling herself is on board as executive producer alongside Neil Blair, Ruth Kenley-Letts, and David Heyman of Heyday Films.
With Warwick Davis returning and a new generation of wizards stepping into the spotlight, the HBO reboot promises to feel both familiar and refreshingly new — a chance for fans to rediscover Hogwarts all over again.
