Comedian and actor Vir Das, who gained attention for his previous legal struggles over his Two Indias monologue at the Kennedy Center, has now shared his thoughts on the ongoing controversy surrounding India’s Got Latent.

Das, known for his bold and often thought-provoking humor, weighed in on the situation as the show’s host Samay Raina and guest judges, including Ranveer Allahbadia, Jaspreet Singh, Apoorva Makhija, and Ashish Chanchlani, are at the center of a heated debate.

In his statement, Vir Das addressed the ongoing discussions around what defines good comedy and the consequences that follow, urging people to consider the broader impact of their content and actions. His comments reflect his own experiences with the sensitive nature of comedy, especially in today’s polarized social climate.

Taking to his Instagram story, Vir Das emphasised that while the audience has the freedom to debate what constitutes good comedy, it’s important to recognize that feedback can have immediate consequences for a comedian’s career.

He wrote, "The audience is always welcome to debate what good comedy is. A good artist will take their feedback head down, mouth shut, and maybe evolve. Either way, the consequences of your comedy on your career and audience are pretty instant. That’s a natural process."

Vir Das also reflected on the state of mainstream media in India and its relationship with emerging new media platforms, saying, “But we are also watching a bunch of irrelevant mainstream media anchors bordering extinction coming together to take down new media that gets millions more views, longer interviews, and far more impact than their bloated studios and fat salary at 1 per cent of the cost. Whether you like the new media or not is irrelevant,"

He continued his commentary by challenging the mainstream media’s role, urging for a shift in focus. “That’s also what’s happening here. And while they debate what good comedy is, please debate what good journalism is, and the news that they should be doing, the questions they should be asking, and who they should be asking them to.”

As the investigation continues and public outcry mounts, the debate over content moderation and creative freedom rages on, with figures like Vir Das and other public voices urging both sides to consider the impact of their words and actions.
