Acclaimed filmmaker Vetrimaaran, known for his powerful narratives and multiple National Award-winning films such as Aadukalam and Asuran, has made a significant announcement regarding his career. While he continues to remain active as a director, the celebrated filmmaker has decided to bid farewell to film production. His upcoming release, Bad Girl, will officially mark his last outing as a producer under his banner, Grass Root Film Company.

Speaking at a press meet for Bad Girl, Vetrimaaran explained the challenges and pressures that come with the responsibilities of production. He highlighted how the controversies surrounding two of his recent projects, Manushi directed by Gopi Nainar, and Bad Girl, have influenced his decision. Both films faced issues with the censor board, with Manushi still stuck in court proceedings. Meanwhile, Bad Girl had to undergo scrutiny from a revising committee before receiving a U/A 16+ certificate.

“As a producer, I am accountable for every aspect of a film—from teaser to trailer—and every reaction can directly affect its box office performance. With Manushi and Bad Girl going through repeated censor screenings and legal hurdles, the burden has grown too heavy. We have decided that Bad Girl will be our final production, and we are closing down Grass Root Film Company,” Vetrimaaran said.

Despite the hurdles, Bad Girl has already made a mark on the international stage. Directed by debutant Varsha Bharath and co-produced by Anurag Kashyap, the film had its world premiere at the International Film Festival Rotterdam 2025, where it won the prestigious NETPAC (Network for the Promotion of Asian Cinema) Award.

The film stars Anjali Sivaraman in the lead role, supported by a talented ensemble including Hridhu Haroon, TeeJay Arunasalam, Saranya Ravichandran, Shanthi Priya, and Sashank Bommireddipalli. Its theatrical release is scheduled for September 5, where it will clash with Sivakarthikeyan’s Madharaasi and Bala’s Gandhi Kannadi, setting the stage for a competitive weekend at the Tamil box office.
