Bollywood actor Saif Ali Khan underwent surgery on Thursday at a Mumbai hospital to remove a knife that had been lodged near his spine following an attack by an intruder at his home. Doctors confirmed that Khan is now stable and "out of danger" after the procedure.
The 54-year-old actor is recovering after undergoing emergency surgery, according to doctors at Lilavati Hospital, where he was admitted following the attack. The incident occurred around 2:30 am at his residence in the 'Satguru Sharan' building.
Dr. Niraj Uttamani, the Chief Operating Officer of Lilavati Hospital, told reporters, "We successfully removed a 2.5-inch knife fragment from the actor's spine." He further explained that Saif Ali Khan sustained two severe injuries, two moderate ones, and two superficial abrasions.
"We wish to inform you that fortunately Saif Ali Khan's surgery has been done very well. He is on the recovery path. He has been shifted to the ICU. Maybe in a day or two he will be shifted to the ward," Dr Uttamani told reporters.
Dr. Uttamani stated that the injuries were deep, but the surgeries were successfully carried out by the medical team. He mentioned that both neurosurgery and plastic surgery had been performed. He further added that, according to their initial assessment, Saif Ali Khan is doing well and is on the path to a full recovery.
Neurosurgeon Dr. Nitin Dange from Lilavati Hospital stated that Saif Ali Khan had suffered a significant injury to his "thoracic spine." "He sustained a major injury to his thoracic spine due to a knife lodged in his spine. Surgery was performed to remove the knife and also to repair the leaking spinal fluid. There were two other deep wounds on his left hand and right side of the neck which were repaired by the plastic surgery team," he said.
Dr. Nitin Dange mentioned that Saif Ali Khan was now completely stable and in recovery. He further explained that Khan would be moved out of the ICU the following morning and that a discharge could be planned in a day or two.
