The recent attack on actor Saif Ali Khan at his Bandra residence, Satguru Sharan, has exposed significant lapses in the building's security measures.
It has been revealed that guards stationed at the building were provided by a housekeeping company, not a licensed security agency, as per top officials of the Maharashtra chapter of the Central Association of Private Security Industry (CAPSI).
As reported by TOI, the housekeeping firm failed to conduct background checks on the guards. The firm does not possess an operational license mandated by the Private Security Agencies Regulation Act (PSARA). The guards lack adequate training and equipment to handle emergencies. The building does not maintain a visitors' register, leaving access points unmonitored.
Shiv Kumar Singh, CAPSI state president, criticised the widespread use of unlicensed firms, alleging that many lack basic requirements like GST registration, provident fund, and other employee benefits. Industry insiders emphasised the risk of hiring unverified personnel, calling for stricter penalties for housing societies that employ unlicensed security services.
JCP (Law and Order) Satyanarayan Chaudhary has vowed stringent action against agencies failing to comply with PSARA. He urged the adoption of a Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) for character verification of guards.
Among the many reactions, actress and neighbour Karishma Tanna voiced her concerns about inadequate security measures in the area. Speaking to The Times of India, Karishma said, "It's a crazy scene outside right now... cops and media are everywhere. This incident is a wake-up call for many standalone buildings in Bandra."
Karishma emphasised the urgent need for improved security protocols, particularly for standalone housing societies. "I've been urging my housing society to increase security for over a year. Watchmen need proper training - they're not equipped to handle emergencies like this. If a burglar breaks in, how can a family defend themselves? It's terrifying." she added.
The actress further pointed out the importance of heightened vigilance in a bustling city like Mumbai. "I hope people take lessons from this. No family deserves to go through this. I'm sure my building will tighten its security now, with more guards on board," she remarked.
