A Bandra court sent the 30-year-old Bangladeshi national accused of stabbing actor Saif Ali Khan to 14-day judicial custody on Wednesday, stating no new grounds justified extending his police custody.
Mohammad Shariful Islam, the accused, was presented before the Bandra magistrate court as his police custody ended. While the police requested a two-day extension for further investigation, the court denied it, citing that he had already been in custody for over ten days.
The magistrate noted that the investigation had been completed and there were no new grounds for extending the custody. He mentioned that if any new evidence surfaced, the police could request fresh custody within the allowed time frame.
According to the police, the accused, arrested from nearby Thane, is a Bangladeshi national who had changed his name from Mohammad Shariful Islam Shehzad to ‘Bijoy Das’ after illegally entering India.
The lawyer representing the accused argued that the investigation had been completed and that further police custody was unnecessary. After considering both arguments, the magistrate noted that the accused had already been in custody for over 10 days.

The magistrate advised the investigating officer that if fresh evidence comes to light, they may request an extension of Fakir's police custody under the new Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) law, as long as it remains within the 14-day limit.
On January 16, actor Saif Ali Khan was attacked by an intruder who repeatedly stabbed him inside his 12th-floor apartment in the upscale Bandra area. The 54-year-old actor underwent emergency surgery at Lilavati Hospital after sustaining a spine injury. He was discharged after five days of treatment.
