Hollywood icon Robert Redford, actor, director and activist, died on September 16, 2025. The fans of the godfather of independent cinema received tributes from his fans all over the world. Joining them is Robert’s co-star Meryl Streep.
The award-winning actress paid an emotional tribute to Robert, calling him a "genius" and a "lion.
According to AFP, Meryl Streep said in the statement, “One of the lions has passed. Rest in peace my lovely friend.”
She starred in the 1985 romantic drama Out of Africa and the 2007 war film Lions for Lambs with Robert.
Despite never having an off-screen romance, Robert and Meryl acknowledged that they had a strong bond while working together.
Meryl has previously admitted that she "had a crush" on Robert Redford and referred to the well-known beauty as the "best kisser" she had ever met in Hollywood.
Robert recalled in the 2019 book Queen Meryl that he was so close to Meryl that it annoyed Pollack while Out of Africa was being filmed.
Marlee Matlin, one of the stars of the Oscar-winning movie Coda, which had its world premiere at Redford's Sundance film festival, also joined the list of celebs who paid tribute to the veteran actor. She wrote on X, "Our film, Coda, came to the attention of everyone because of Sundance.”
Our film, CODA, came to the attention of everyone because of Sundance. And Sundance happened because of Robert Redford. A genius has passed. RIP Robert. pic.twitter.com/nwttVD1GvL— Marlee Matlin (@MarleeMatlin) September 16, 2025
She continued, “And Sundance happened because of Robert Redford. A genius has passed."
Meanwhile, Jane Fonda, who starred opposite Redford in four films, also paid tribute to the late actor. She described him as "a beautiful person in every way". "It hit me hard this morning when I read that Bob was gone. I can't stop crying," she said.
She added, "He meant a lot to me and was a beautiful person in every way. He stood for an America we have to keep fighting for."
