Actress Rhea Chakraborty recently recalled the prolonged impact of the Sushant Singh Rajput case on her entire family. She also reflected on how they dealt with it.
While speaking at the NDTV event, Rhea explained how the experience changed them. She claims that her entire family sobbed on the day the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) provided her with relief.
She remembered embracing her brother and recognising that the experience had permanently changed her parents as well. According to her, the protracted and agonizing struggle had permanently changed the once-carefree family.
Rhea also opened up about the moment she learned she had been given a clean chit. She said her mother first heard it on television, but Rhea brushed it off, assuming the media was being inaccurate as usual.
It was only after her lawyer confirmed the news that she allowed herself to believe it. "When I got a clean chit, I wasn't happy. At the core of it, I knew someone very close to me was gone, and nothing could change that. But I was relieved for my parents. They live in society and constantly face people. For them, things had become very difficult. I thought maybe now they could move around a little more freely," she added.
Reflecting on her parents' first reaction after she was declared clear of all charges, she further said, "Everyone in my house cried that day. I hugged my brother and broke down. When I looked at my parents, I realised we had all changed forever. We were no longer the same carefree family. That moment altered us permanently."
"People said he did not go because of you. I always knew I hadn't done anything. But even when the clean chit came, I couldn't feel happy. I was only happy for my parents," Rhea said.
The Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) detained Rhea Chakraborty on September 8, 2020, in relation to the death of Sushant Singh Rajput, on suspicion of providing him with drugs. Before being released on bail on October 7, she was detained by the court for almost a month. She was ultimately exonerated of all charges, Sushant's death was confirmed to be a suicide, and foul play was ruled out when the CBI finally submitted its closure report on March 22, 2025.
