  • Dhamaal 4 now set to release in theatres on June 12, 2026
  • Release postponed to avoid clash with Dhurandhar 2 and Toxic
  • Ajay Devgn, Riteish Deshmukh, and ensemble cast headline the comedy sequel

Vijay Sethupathi is known for carefully picking his roles and not doing cameos, but he made an exception for Jailer 2. The actor, who has always said he prefers big roles to small ones, said he made his choice because he looks up to superstar Rajinikanth.

Vijay Sethupathi recently talked to The Hollywood Reporter India about why he agreed to be in the sequel even though he had always said he wouldn't. He said again that he usually doesn't take cameo roles, but he couldn't say no to the chance to share the screen with Rajinikanth. Vijay said that being around Rajinikanth was very rewarding. The two actors had worked together before in Petta.

"I did a cameo in Jailer 2 because I really like Rajinikanth sir." I learn so much when I'm with him. The actor said, "He and other superstars have stayed in the business for decades, and there's a lot to learn from that journey."

Nelson Dilipkumar is directing Jailer 2, which stars Rajinikanth in the lead role once more. The movie is set to come out in theatres later this year. It is a follow-up to the hit movie Jailer from 2023, which went on to become the highest-grossing Tamil film of that year.

The first movie was about Muthuvel Pandian, a retired jailer who goes on a quest to find his missing son. Along the way, he gets caught up in a dangerous fight with an odd idol smuggler. The movie also featured Ramya Krishnan, Vinayakan, Tamannaah Bhatia, Vasanth Ravi, and Yogi Babu, and it was also well-known for having Mohanlal and Shiva Rajkumar make special appearances.

Vijay Sethupathi also talked about why he has been more picky about playing villains and friendly characters in the past few years during the interview. He said that even though he likes playing bad guys, he has been careful because there aren't many different kinds of bad guys. He said, "I'm being offered similar, routine villain roles, and that's something I want to avoid."

Vijay Sethupathi has been in a number of high-profile pan-Indian projects lately, which has helped him grow his business in many fields. These are Shah Rukh Khan's Jawan, Sriram Raghavan's Merry Christmas, and the Raj and DK-created Prime Video series Farzi. After his well-received roles in movies like Super Deluxe, 96, and Master, he started these businesses.

Vijay Sethupathi will next be seen in Gandhi Talks, which also stars Aditi Rao Hydari and Siddarth Jadhav. The movie will come out in theaters on January 30, which adds another interesting project to his long list of films.
