Veteran actress Rekha, who entered Bollywood in the 1970s, quickly became a sensation with her exceptional acting skills and commanding screen presence. However, her rise to fame was met with some resistance, as certain individuals spread rumours questioning her professionalism. In response to these unfounded claims, filmmaker Rakesh Roshan came to Rekha's defence.
In a recent interview with ANI, Rakesh Roshan shared that when he was casting Rekha for Khoon Bhari Maang, he was warned by several people who doubted her reliability. Despite these warnings, Rakesh chose to ignore the rumours.
He explained, “Rekha has a quality which very few heroines have. She is different in all her films. I did a couple of films with her as an actor – Khoobsurat, Aakraman, and Aurat. When I went to her with a mother’s role in Khoon Bhari Maang as a director, people warned me against her. They said you are making a film with her, she never comes on time, always runs away before time.”
Rakesh continued to say that although he had heard numerous rumours about Rekha, his personal experiences while working with her were always positive.
“I always heard these rumours about her, but whenever I worked with her, I never witnessed any such thing,” he noted. He further recalled asking Rekha about the challenges she might present while working on the film, given that it was a difficult subject. Rekha's response was firm: “What are you even saying? Have I ever done this? I only trouble people who don’t pay me or they don’t fulfil their commitments.”
In addition to his Khoon Bhari Maang experience, Rakesh Roshan also reminisced about approaching Rekha for a role in Koi Mil Gaya.
He revealed, “I went to narrate the story to her. After narrating the story, I asked her, ‘How is it?’. She is very clever. She quickly said, ‘You are not narrating this story to me because you want my feedback, you are narrating this to me because you want me to play the role of the mother.’ I said, ‘Yes’.”
