Over twenty years after its premiere, Kal Ho Naa Ho still has a strong emotional impact on viewers, not only because of its compelling plot and outstanding performances but also because of the feelings it arouses.
Preity Zinta's moving performance as Naina Catherine Kapur, a serious, reserved Indian-American woman whose life is transformed after meeting her lively neighbour Aman Mathur (played by Shah Rukh Khan), was one of the film's most notable features.
In a recent interaction with fans on social media platform X (formerly Twitter), Preity responded to a follower who shared how the film continues to make them cry. “@realpreityzinta ma’am, every time I watch Kal Ho Naa Ho, I cry like a kid. You absolutely nailed Naina Catherine Kapur. Learnt a lesson as well that is love sometimes means letting go,” the fan wrote.
The actress offered a deeply personal response: “Yes, I cry when I see it, and I cried when we were filming it too! My first love died in a car crash, so this film always hit different. Fun Fact – Most scenes, all actors cried naturally…. And Aman’s death scene had everyone crying in front of the camera and behind it too!”
Saif Ali Khan starred in the romantic drama, which was directed by Nikkhil Advani and produced by Karan Johar. It became a landmark movie for all three of the main actors. Particularly, Shah Rukh Khan's poignant closing sequences are regarded as some of the most heartbreaking scenes in Hindi cinema.
Last year, the movie was re-released in theatres, giving viewers another chance to experience its enchantment. Many started making assumptions about a possible sequel as a result of its resurgence in popularity.
In an interview with casting director Mukesh Chhabra, director Nikkhil Advani did, however, confirm that there are no plans for a Kal Ho Naa Ho 2 and that, in his opinion, there would be no need for one.
