After just one season, NBC has formally cancelled Suits LA, the eagerly awaited spin-off of the popular legal drama Suits.
Three years after it ended, the original show's popularity returned to Netflix, but the new series fell short of expectations. Variety reports that the cancellation comes after the show's unimpressive February premiere, which failed to win over both viewers and critics.
“Suits LA has been cancelled at NBC after just one season, Variety has learned,” the report stated, noting that the series struggled to generate the same buzz as its predecessor, making “only a small dent in the ratings and drawing mostly negative reviews upon its debut.”
Stephen Amell played Ted Black in the spin-off, a former federal prosecutor who becomes a successful entertainment lawyer in Los Angeles. Through a combination of current-day crises and flashbacks that delved into his past life, relationships, and legal battles that shaped his character, the series examined his professional struggles and personal development.
Creator Aaron Korsh tried to appeal to original Suits fans by including well-liked Suits alumni Rick Hoffman (Louis Litt) and Gabriel Macht (Harvey Spectre) in cameos. These sentimental references, however, were insufficient to improve the show's reception.
In India, India Today reviewed each new episode weekly, but even those reviews struggled to find much to celebrate. In one critique titled “Legal drama turns legal mess – case of identity crisis,” the publication wrote, “Creator Aaron Korsh has got the structure right, but there's no concrete inside. The new Suits series is not able to establish a permanent conflict that makes it capable of making the audience sit up and take notice… The romance is not romancing, and the mystery is not thrilling enough.”
After airing more than ten episodes, Suits LA finally struggled to establish itself. With its cancellation, it now joins a number of other NBC series that were recently cancelled after just one season, such as Lopez vs. Lopez, The Irrational, Found, and Night Court.
