The highly anticipated prequel to The Lion King, Mufasa: The Lion King, has been making waves at the global box office. With a remarkable $470 million in worldwide earnings, it has become the ninth highest-grossing film of 2024. Despite its box office success, the film’s digital release remains shrouded in uncertainty, with Disney yet to confirm an official date for its arrival on streaming platforms.
As is customary with Disney releases, the film is expected to follow a traditional release window.

In recent years, Disney has adhered to a 100-day exclusive theatrical period before launching films on digital platforms. Based on this timeline, the streaming debut for Mufasa: The Lion King could be expected around March or April 2025.

Additionally, Disney films often debut on streaming platforms on Wednesdays, as was the case with The Little Mermaid, which became available for digital purchase after 103 days of theatrical release. Given that Mufasa: The Lion King premiered on December 20, 2024, fans can likely expect the film to arrive for digital purchase in January 2025, ahead of its eventual streaming release in early 2025.

Mufasa: The Lion King serves as a prequel to the 2019 live-action adaptation of The Lion King. It delves into the backstory of Mufasa, the revered lion king, exploring his rise to the throne.

Director Barry Jenkins, known for his Academy Award-winning work, has expressed the importance of understanding the original 2019 film to grasp the full context of Mufasa’s character and legacy. He highlights how the audience has grown up with the idea of Mufasa as a symbol of unwavering goodness, while Scar embodies evil—a dynamic central to the narrative of the franchise.

The film’s story is one of growth, courage, and destiny, as Mufasa journeys from humble beginnings to the throne. It features stunning visual effects, unforgettable animation, and an evocative musical score that elevates the story. The cast of Mufasa: The Lion King brings the characters to life with a stellar ensemble of voice talent. Aaron Pierre voices the titular Mufasa, with Donald Glover returning as Simba. The film also stars Mads Mikkelsen as Kiros, Beyoncé as Nala, Blue Ivy Carter as Kiara, and Kelvin Harrison Jr. as the villainous Scar, alongside a host of other familiar faces, including Billy Eichner, Seth Rogen, and John Kani.

Currently, the film is still playing in theaters, but fans are eagerly awaiting the chance to experience Mufasa: The Lion King from the comfort of their homes. If the pattern of previous Disney releases holds, it’s only a matter of time before the magical world of Mufasa is available on digital platforms, allowing audiences to relive the epic tale of the Orphan King’s journey to greatness.
