Martin Scorsese isn’t slowing down. The legendary director has locked in his next film, and it’s a big one: What Happens at Night, with Leonardo DiCaprio and Jennifer Lawrence leading the cast.
Deadline reports that Apple Original Films is circling to finance and produce alongside Studiocanal, which has been developing the script since last year. Production is eyeing a January 2026 start.
This marks yet another collaboration between Martin and Apple, who previously teamed on Killers of the Flower Moon. The studio also has ongoing first-look deals with both Scorsese’s Sikelia Productions and Leonardo’s Appian Way banner—making this team-up feel almost inevitable.
DiCaprio, Lawrence, and a Haunting Tale
The script, adapted by Patrick Marber from Peter Cameron’s eerie novel, follows a married American couple who travel to a snowy European town to adopt a baby. They end up in a cavernous, nearly deserted hotel, encountering a mysterious mix of characters: a flamboyant chanteuse, a faith healer, and a dangerous businessman. As the story unfolds, the couple begin to lose grip on themselves and the life they thought they had built.
It’s exactly the kind of psychological, dreamlike terrain Martin and Leonardo previously explored in Shutter Island. With Jennifer joining in, the project now boasts three Oscar winners above the line.

Perfect Timing for the Trio
The announcement comes as Leonardo gears up for the release of One Battle After Another, Paul Thomas Anderson’s new film that’s already riding strong early buzz. Jennifer, meanwhile, recently starred in Die, My Love opposite Robert Pattinson, a Cannes premiere that drew attention for its raw performances.

For Martin, it’s another reminder that even at this stage of his career, he’s still hungry to push boundaries. And with Apple circling, the film could follow the same prestige-driven release strategy as Killers of the Flower Moon—a splashy theatrical bow followed by a streaming push.
For now, all eyes are on January, when the cameras are expected to roll on this snowy, unsettling tale.
