Malayalam rapper Vedan, whose real name is Hirandas Murali, was taken into excise custody after cannabis was allegedly seized from his flat in Thrippunithura. According to a report by Reporterlive, the authorities discovered five grams of cannabis during a raid conducted based on a tip-off.
At the time of the raid, Vedan and eight others were reportedly present in the flat. Sources indicated that they had gathered for a “program discussion,” according to initial information.
Officials further stated that a medical examination will be conducted to determine whether Vedan was under the influence of drugs at the time of the raid.
Vedan is known in the Malayalam independent music scene for his work, particularly for writing and singing the track Kuthanthram Thanthram (Viyarrppu Thunniyitta Kuppaayam) for the popular Malayalam film Manjummel Boys. His rising profile in the music industry has drawn significant attention to the case.
The incident involving Vedan comes shortly after a similar case involving Malayalam filmmakers Khalid Rahman and Ashraf Hamza. Just a day before Vedan’s detention, Rahman and Hamza were reportedly detained for possession of hybrid cannabis at a flat in Kochi. They were allegedly found with 1.6 grams of hybrid cannabis and were released after questioning. The residence from which they were picked up belonged to noted cinematographer Sameer Thahir.
The recent surge in drug-related arrests in Kerala’s entertainment industry has raised concerns. Officials mentioned that, “the recent string of cases highlights the ongoing efforts by excise authorities to crack down on drug use across Kerala.” They also confirmed that surveillance and enforcement activities have been intensified following confidential tips.
As investigations continue, more clarity is expected on Vedan’s legal situation. Meanwhile, his involvement in this case has sparked considerable conversation within the Malayalam music and film industry.
