Mohanlal’s action-packed drama L2: Empuraan has kicked off its box office run with remarkable success, surpassing Rs 50 crore since its release on March 27.

Directed by Prithviraj Sukumaran, the film witnessed a strong performance over its opening weekend, with reports indicating that it collected Rs 14 crore on its first Sunday alone. As per Sacnilk estimates, L2: Empuraan maintained solid momentum in its initial three days, earning an impressive Rs 45.35 crore India net.

On Sunday, March 30, 2025, L2: Empuraan recorded an impressive overall Malayalam occupancy of 75.26% in theaters. The film witnessed strong audience turnout across different showtimes, with afternoon shows leading at 84.39%, followed by evening screenings at 77.67%. Morning and night shows also maintained solid occupancy rates of 68.99% and 69.99%, respectively, reflecting the film’s strong hold at the box office.

According to Sacnilk data, Empuraan recorded varying occupancy rates across different language versions on Sunday. The Telugu screenings saw an overall occupancy of 17.22%, while the Tamil version performed better with 25.20%. Meanwhile, the Hindi screenings registered a lower turnout, with an occupancy rate of 10.00%.

Empuraan made a thunderous debut at the box office, surpassing expectations with a record-breaking Rs 21.5 crore on its opening day—doubling the previous highest opening for any Malayalam film. However, collections saw a dip on day two, settling at Rs 11.1 crore, before stabilizing on day three with earnings of Rs 13.25 crore, maintaining strong momentum.

Amidst its commercial success, the film has also found itself at the center of controversy due to its depiction of the 2002 Gujarat Riots, sparking debates and discussions among audiences and critics alike.

Serving as the second installment in a trilogy, Empuraan builds upon the legacy of Lucifer (2019), further expanding its gripping narrative. Led by the legendary Mohanlal, the film boasts an ensemble cast featuring Prithviraj Sukumaran, Tovino Thomas, Abhimanyu Singh, Indrajith Sukumaran, and Manju Warrier, adding depth and intrigue to its cinematic universe.
