Filmmaker Karan Johar has weighed in on Timothée Chalamet losing the Best Actor race at the 98th Academy Awards, questioning whether the actor’s earlier controversy surrounding ballet and opera comments may have influenced perceptions during awards season.

Timothée had been considered a strong contender for Best Actor for his performance in the film Marty Supreme. However, his chances appeared to face turbulence after a widely discussed remark in which he suggested that traditional art forms such as ballet and opera were losing relevance. The comments triggered criticism from artists and performers across the performing arts community.

Following the Oscars outcome, Karan addressed the debate on social media, reflecting on the situation and raising a thought-provoking question about whether the backlash surrounding Chalamet’s remarks affected his chances of winning. Karan Johar took to his Instagram Stories and wrote, “Can you separate personal opinion (read that as stupidity) from talent? Is it fair to Sin over supreme? This is a pure debate…"

The controversy gained further traction during the Oscars ceremony itself when host Conan O'Brien joked about Timothée’s earlier statements in his opening monologue. The comedian humorously referenced the backlash from the ballet and opera communities, turning the moment into one of the ceremony’s widely discussed highlights.

Timothée reportedly laughed off the joke during the broadcast, appearing relaxed despite the ongoing debate around his remarks. However, the issue had already sparked broader discussions in the entertainment world about the importance of traditional art forms and the influence of public statements during awards campaigns.

Despite the actor receiving several nominations, the night was concluded with the actor going home with no award, as Marty Supreme did not take home any of the nominations. Marty Supreme lost all nine nominations, including Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actor, and Best Original Screenplay. Marty Supreme was also nominated in the technical categories, including Cinematography, Film Editing, and Production Design.

Several artists and public figures had earlier criticised the actor’s comments, arguing that dismissing classical disciplines like ballet and opera undermines their cultural significance. The controversy also sparked online debates about whether modern cinema stars should be more mindful of how they speak about other art forms.
