Michael B. Jordan took home the Best Actor award at the 98th Academy Awards, defeating Timothée Chalamet. Although Chalamet was long seen to be the front-runner for the lead role in Marty Supreme, many are speculating that a single, poorly timed comment had affected his win.
Chalamet has been dominating the award season for months, but his interview might have affected his Oscar 2026 win.
During an actor-on-actor interview with Variety and CNN in February, the conversation's designated trendsetter attacked various classical institutions. The light-hearted exchange soon turned chaotic, which received huge backlash on social media.
He said, “I don’t want to be working in ballet or opera, where no one is interested anymore,” before branding them “dying art forms.”
The actor's comments left the film industry disappointed, which frequently sees itself as the glitzy guardian of the fine arts. They had a dissonant symphony-like sound.
Prominent members of the Academy, such as Steven Spielberg, Whoopi Goldberg, and Jamie Lee Curtis, openly expressed their disdain. Spielberg successfully suggested that Chalamet's perspective was perhaps a little too modern for its own good when he argued that the "cinematic experience" and classical performance are united by a similar dedication to audience participation.
The discussion soon turned into a media frenzy. Renowned ballerina Misty Copeland did more than simply make a statement in a brilliant example of high-culture clapback.
For the event itself, the Academy even staged a surprise performance by her. It was a silent dig at Chalamet's disparaging remarks, which many perceived as a direct retaliation.

Regional arts organisations participated in the choreography as well. To demonstrate that people do, in fact, care, the Seattle Opera provided a cheeky "TIMOTHEE" bargain, offering a 14% discounts.
Additionally, Oscars 2026 host Conan O'Brien, the host, who is known for his razor-sharp tongue at these galas, didn’t miss a chance to troll Chalamet.
During his opening monologue, the host said, “Security is extremely tight tonight.”
He added, “I’m told there are concerns about attacks from both the opera and ballet communities. They’re just mad you left out jazz!”
